With the new regulations, I'm thinking about trying handgun hunting for when I have to take a climber on public land. Something like a Glock 40 mos with a red dot. I figure my chances at shots longer than 50 yards are slim, but this beats carrying a rifle a mile into the woods.

    Thoughts?

Sorry to confuse things, of course the regulations are as clear as mud. I'll remove the pic.

I can finally use my 7.5” 44 Mag Super Redhawk in MD for something besides blowing expensive holes in paper.

Is the Glock 10mm a fully supported chamber? I know the .40s go kaboom with hot ammo.

I'm not sure. My requirements are:

    1. Cartridge and barrel meet the requirements.
    2. Can use a red dot.
    3. Isn't ridiculously expensive.
    4. Semi auto is preferred but not absolutely necessary
    5. Holsters are available. Maybe even a chest rig.

If there are better options, please point them out.

While the Glock does not fully support the head of the case, I have never seen a out of battery event when using factory ammunition. I carried Glock 22 and 23 and also shot IDPA with them and never had a problem in thousands of rounds.

I have seen a couple cases let go from folks using reloads. I believe after LEE developed their their Lee Precision Model LP90487 Bulge Buster Kit, there were less problems with unsupported failures.

If you want to use a revolver, there are many options. For a semi auto, for a rather easily obtained cartridge, the 10mm is pretty much it. There are other auto cartridges that will get up to 700 FPE but you can't walk into Cabelas and buy the ammo for them. ;)

If revolvers are potentially in play, have you considered the 7.5" Super Redhawk in 454 Casull? Meets all of the requirements except for #4. Aftermarket rails, mounts, and holsters are readily available. Its ability to also handle 45 colt (including hot loads) is also a plus and adds a nice bit of flexibility.

500 S&W it was designed for big game, my current loads 325 gr Hornaday FPX hand loads clocked at a little over 1423 FPS. Also, Winchester hand loads 375 gr core bond HP clocked at 1510 FPS. I have been pretty consistent keeping groups between 6 and 7 inches at 50 yards. At about 70 yards groups are typically at 7 inches.

I use a revolver iron sites only, once I got use to the weight at 5.4 lbs loaded things got better. Practice Practice is needed.

I found a spot where a holster was custom made for my pistol. www.americasgunstore.com

That’s a nice one. Someone where I am just put one up for $609.
***edit: sold that quick listed yesterday, SPF in the last few minutes.

Shame I am not a privileged white guy with money! I’d love to jump on that!

A friend had the sw in 460. Really like that for deer and hogs out to 100y

I am planning on carrying my Springfield Armory V16 Longslide in .45 Super. Took several deer with it back when I lived in Mi. Have to lower my range though, the Buffalo Bore ammo is no where near as consistent in accuracy as the now defunct Triton ammo used to be.
