Just wondering how much y’all would be willing to pay for a CCL in Maryland.

Granted, I personally believe that having to get a dang license to adequately protect oneself in the first place is a violation of individual liberties, but here we are so it’s at least worth discussing.

If it were presented to the state in such a way like the casinos... ie “charge X amount for each license, and the full amount goes to state education funding,” (or choose your pick for the revenue destination) ... could that be a way to negotiate?

There’s already people willing to pay the ATF for SBR and suppression, myself included. Why not this too? Has this been suggested or tried before?

How much to exercise first amendment rights? Driving is a privilege with associated fees and licenses. Rights shouldn’t be.

Yes, as i stated, it is a violation of individual liberty to require a license for anything really. This definitely includes gun legislation. My question wasn’t whether or not it you’re happy with it. My question was if/how much you’d pay. Compromise is when both sides are equally unhappy.

Hunting licenses pay for a lot of natural resource/environmental goods and services. Why couldn’t this achieve the same goal? Our current political atmosphere is not willing to just hand over CCL’s. I’m just saying offer something of mutual benefit.

If it cost the same as an ATF stamp, that’d be $200. I did a quick search and according to a CBS news thing, gun ownership in Maryland is about 20%. Cut that in half (handgun vs long gun) and of about 6 million residents, that’d be about $120 million per year generated.

My math is just a rough ballpark but you get the picture. Allocate those hundreds of millions of dollars somewhere worthwhile and it’s a noteable argument, like casinos.

Again, I get that it’s ridiculous to have to pay for something that is a fundamental right, but we’re not facing sane, freedom-loving individuals in our state. The anti-gun lobby is powerful, but it’s about convincing moderates that it’s a good idea (not hardcore democrats). Nobody argues with money

The problem with putting a number on it is that soon enough you’ll have to pay a fee to have a gun in your home. It won’t be $200 like the NFA stamp that hasn’t gone up since its inception (meant to be cost prohibitive back in the day as well) but something REALLY prohibitive like $2000 tax annually per firearm.

And who knows, hypothetically, say they pass something like I am suggesting. What if crime rates go down? Gun violence down? Then you try and make the argument that it’s too expensive or something.

Set a cap in the bill: “a price that shall not exceed $200” or something along those lines

I believe it's $200 to apply for the CCW. I'd be willing to pay that, if it stood a reasonable chance of being approved.
