So I have been a software developer for 23 years with C, C++, C#, Microsoft stack like WinForm and ASP.NET MVC, along with many other acronyms like Linux, Javascript, and SQL.

I'm looking for a permanent job nationwide or some interim work locally here in Metro DC/MD/VA area.

If you know any lead, please let me know.
    Are you still looking?

We have a need for offensive and defensive security folks. With your background, it should be easy for you to jump over to a defensive security person.

For the cost of one Senior programmer in the US I can hire 4 in India. It sucks but it is reality. When we have a programmer position open up they, upper management, tells us that we can only hire in a lost cost geo.
Yeah, India and Pakistan provide a lot of hired guns. The firm I contract with uses all offshore teams. The have about 800 apps, and they are maintained by Indian teams. In fact, one of my wall clocks is set to India Time (IST) so I know when to call them if they are trying to avoid me.

I think the best course of action for the OP is to jump over to a defensive security guy. He probably has a lot of the knowledge. He just needs to learn to sell himself as one.

Amazon only wants 20-30 year old H1bs for $10 an hour or purple haired gender confused millennials willing to work 90 hours a week. Anyone with 23 years of experience is pretty well fcked. Its just how things work. Only field where you are a liability the wiser you are because you have learned how not to get fcked.
Not true. Been in the industry for 35+ years. I know a lot of young engineers going to Amazon. People that have clearances, not purple haired! Trust me they are not settling for $10/hour!

The work life balance issues at Amazon engineering side are well publicized. It is hit or miss depending on what team you are on. As someone with ~26 ish years industry experience I still wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole and they can't afford me anyway. "I know a lot of young engineers going to Amazon" Sure. Like I said. They want them young and stupid so that can be churned through the stack rank nightmare and get em out before they vest. The purple hair sjw thing is what I have heard from colleagues that have been through the Bezos grinder. The pay is absolutely competitve now. Everyone has to be. Also this thread was pre covid. H1b is only an edge case in the market at the moment. That can change. All that matters is price to a lot of hiring managers and C staff. The minute Brandon can open the spigot he will. Can't have IT folks making competitive wages.

Used to be one of the H1b rules is paying a prevailing wage to maintain a competitive edge to US work force. I assume it’s still true. That why there are huge off shore development centers where the wages are much less. I was an IT Director for an Indian IT solutions company in the US. While we had about 1000 consultants here, we built a large 10 story building in Bangalore that was a state of the art development center in the Electric City.

https://www.epi.org/publication/h-1b-visas-and-prevailing-wage-levels/ The prevailing wage rule constraint is a complete joke with little to no enforcement. Among things I've seen in my career - Sr H1B imports being paid $15 hr as "Senior Software Engineers" in New Jersey (Woodbridge). Now the H1b agency was billing the hourly equivalent of around $70K a year. This was the late 90s so still a good deal cheaper than prevailing rate at the time/location. The engineer was not seeing that. In this case the PM/Manager was also getting a cut as a kick back as a minority owner of the h1b firm but I won't go into that little bit of fraud. The CIO had an open file share with no password and another developer quickly found the salary budget. Good ol windows 95 days.

    Copy that!
We had a couple of people on our legal team and all they did was try to figure out the convoluted H1b rules.

I was in the 1998' to 2008' era. We had a lot of Oracle and SAP guys that we billed out at $175/hr and the consultants got about $125/hr. Our problem was the lack of domestic talent. Other guys that did multitier client/server made about $75/hr. Obviously, the house gets a good chuck, otherwise what's the point. We also had a big influx of COBOL guys in the 1999-2000 frame.
