If a Maryland resident wants to purchase a handgun from another Maryland resident, is an HQL needed of the buyer if the pistol is an old 1950s made gun? I thought there was some type of exemption if it was an old gun

HQL not needed for any c&r firearm, regardless who the seller is.

Still has to be transferred at MSP for a private sale. Doesn't change that requirement.

to expand, a gun fifty years old or older is categorized as a Curio and Relic (C&R) and C&R handguns are exempt from the HQL as noted above.
So any handgun made before and including 1970 is C&R and exempt.
(The ATF also classifies some specific post-1970 handguns as C&R which would also be exempt).

Ok, that’s what I thought. Mother told me today that she wants a handgun But she doesn’t have an HQL and the criteria for one is too troublesome for her (she’s in her 70s) so I’ll do a local transfer on a c&r colt detective special in 38 that I have

Make sure she can handle the double action of the detective special. As we get older, our hand strength decreases even if you don't have arthritis. This can make trying to shoot the weapon dangerous to the shooter or others in the area.

Why not just loan it to her?
