Wifey's 22LR 10-shot mag is loaded with alternating rounds of HP's and solids (all HV). Maybe mix in a few of these Federals?
    .

What is the purpose of alternating rounds?

Not sure which are more damaging - penetration(SP?) vs. expansion(HP?) - so 5 rounds of each. Wifey will empty the clip.

With a .22 out of a handgun, penetration will be low with the best ammo. You need all of it.

I remember taking BabyMomma to a gun store to try to get her interested in shooting and self-defense. She was interested in and handled a pretty, rose colored wood gripped stainless LadySmith. When the moron behind the counter was told the application included self-defense, he reached up and grabbed a big, black tactical 12-bore and loudly racked the slide several times. She left the store.

Just my opinion, but I wouldn't be mixing a hodgepodge of different rounds in any magazine where reliability is critical. I'd also be looking for best of breed reliability with ignition as well, which most definitely isn't a rimfire strong suit.

Of the rounds that stand a much better than average chance of both feeding and going bang, CCI Mini-Mags in a 40 grain solid is front of mind. Were it me, that's what I'd be testing for the reliability I'd expect they'd produce in your rifle. A brick or so is the test that would satisfy me.

At one time, I carried a Beretta 21A as a hideout gun. At the time, it was the smallest reliable small .22 around. I did a lot of testing for reliable ignition as well as extraction and wound up using CCI Mini Mags. I polished the hell out of the chamber so that, if I had a failure, I could flip the barrel open and it would throw the round out and I would reset it and rack another round.

This was strictly a close in weapon and I would not think about using it for anything else.

If someone were to want to use a .22 for self protection, today I would recommend the Smith and Wesson M&P Compact .22. I have run literally thousands of rounds through mine and have not had one failure to feed from it's magazines. I can't say that for any other .22 I have used.

The M&P .22 Compact is built in the US ( unlike the full size model which is a completely different action) and is the size of a .380. The slide racks easily and the mag loads easily for people who have week hands as it has a button on the side to compress the spring with. It is a hammer fired pistol which makes for strong strikes on the firing pin. This results in less misfires from light strikes. The only rounds that don't fire in mine are those that won't fire even if the rim is rotated and struck again.

The are available for @ $400 or so and are also compressor ready. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/918941430

    Ha! ^That’s^ quite the write-up!

So, based on your recommend, I just ordered the spouse one via GunBuyer (my first experience with them so, it’ll be interesting to see how that goes, as well!)

$426 w Free Shipping to my local FFL (but tax :mad54: )

This’ll be in addition to her Glock 44 … guess I’ll surprise her with it on her bday (she’s more’n taken care of for this Christmas :innocent0

I'm sure you will enjoy it. The only downside is that mags are expensive but they really work well.

I practice with it weekly and shoot steel matches with it and it is more reliable than my Ruger Mks. While my Rugers have better sights, the mags, (no matter how well I have tweaked them) periodically have a stoppage. The M&P .22 Compact has never stopped except for a poorly primed round. I have installed fiber optic sights on mine but may go buy an optic adapter plate from Outerimpact so I can put a Red Dot on it.

FYI, the pistol is easy to take down if you want to polish the sear and hammer surfaces.

She has a Walther P-22 which seems to get a lot of negative press, although we have not experienced any issues at all. We have shot many mags full of alternating ammo types with no problems. I'll pick up a box of the Fed Punch and give it a try.

Years ago, I watched a video comparing .22lr rounds, and the Remington Yellowjackets seemed to be the favorites, so I bought a bunch of them. When the crackheads lived next door, I filled the mags of my daughter's 15-22 with them. She also has access to my 9mm pistol, but I wanted her to have options since the 15-22 is her preferred firearm.

pretty much no HP will expand at 22 velocities, in a few gel tests some stingers do, out of a rifle past 1600FPS, but that is it. The real reson for the cavity originally was to make a lighter bullet hit higher velocities with the same profile as a 40gr solid to feed in semi-autos. Flat out no reason to stagger them. If you must use a 22 for defense, best off with the largest, most reliable mag of whatever the gun feeds best in SV/HV ammo. 22 doesn't penetrate sufficiently as it is, any expansion or fragmentation will make that worse.

IMO the best advice to give if someone asks you for a recommendation for the best defensive 22, is a training class.

So, hey, circling back to report it is received, wrapped and hidden until her birthday, in a month …. First time I can remember I bought her a gun that I had to resist the urge to run to the range with, myself first! :lol2:

Loaded up on ten (10) extra mags (you’re right ouch!) from a different vendor than who’d I’d originally ordered the gun from (GunBuyer) and a week later I get a call from a young “Alexis” (wtf is it about that name that drives me nuts - in a good way?!!!!!) who apologetically reports there was an inventory glitch and gosh, sorry, they don’t actually have that gun in stock.

She offered either a credit or refund on my card and I chose the latter and hung up ….. and then remembered I also have 10 freaking mags on their way for that danged model!

Scrambled over to GunDeals.com, plugged in the SKU and Lo and Behold Smoky Mountain Guns and Ammo had it for $390! :party29:

VERY anxious for her birthday to hurry up and get here, now!

Glad it still ended up working out for you even with the Gunbuyer fiasco. Looking forward to hearing the range report. I wonder how much different it is in size from the TX22. I really have enjoyed mine at the range.

We all have opinions, but has anyone actually fired Punch yet? Can we get a micrometer or caliper measurement of case length? Is it a standard .22 Long / Long Rifle case or is it extended a la Stinger?

I don't have the ability to do the measurements, but I can give you this. Stinger on the left, Punch on the right.

Well, my wife has hit a point where she said she's uncomfortable shooting my model 13 three inch with std pressure 158 grain hp.

She's very comfortable and proficient with our M&P 22 compacts, but I'm not sure what to feed it for best results. I would have thought cci mini mags, but I saw this thread.
I'll look over the posts to see if anyone has done real world testing. If not, I'll try to get and test some.
