The third annual Sanner’s Lake “Frozen Chosin” Match will be held on 13 January 2018. Mark your calendars!

As always, M1 Carbines are the focus of the match, but any centerfire rifle or carbine used in service during the Korean conflict is acceptable.

The following Wikipedia pages will be used to determine acceptable rifles and carbines:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Korean_War_weapons#Rifles

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Korean_War_weapons#Carbines

If it’s on the list and legal for use at Sanner’s, bring it! The rifle or carbine must be configured as it was used in service, so sporter modifications, aftermarket precision sights, bedded stocks, etc. are NOT allowed. Modern replicas (e.g. James River M1 Carbine) or semi-automatic versions of automatic weapons (e.g. Auto-Ordnance Thompson, Ohio Ordnance Works BAR) are acceptable. Iron sights only! No mounted optics or bipods. Mounted bayonets, on the other hand, are acceptable and encouraged! Shooting mats, slings and spotting scopes are acceptable (and a good idea). Attire should be appropriate to the weather (period correct preferred!). No custom shooting jackets or specialized gloves.

    Match Details:
Thirty round match using a standard NRA SR-1 target at 100 yards. Sighting shots followed by ten shots prone slow fire, ten shots prone rapid fire, and ten shots standing slow fire in accordance with NRA high power rifle match procedures (details below). Plenty of coaching available for those who haven’t tried position shooting before. Beginners encouraged! Loaner rifles and ammo may be provided with advance notice. Workarounds for physically impaired or handicapped shooters will be made as needed.

    Who:
Open to the public. Non-members coordinate with match director for gate access.

    Why:
The Battle of Chosin Reservoir was a brutal 17-day battle of the Korean War, fought over the roughest terrain in the harshest winter weather conditions imaginable. Allied troops were encircled and attacked by enemy forces but were able to break out and inflict crippling losses on the enemy. A cold front from Siberia had descended over the Chosin Reservoir and the temperature plunged to as low as -35 °F. The bitter weather resulted in frostbite casualties, icy roads, and numerous weapon malfunctions. Medical supplies froze, morphine syringes had to be thawed in a medic's mouth before they could be injected, and iced up blood plasma was useless on the battlefield. Cutting off clothing to deal with a wound risked frostbite and gangrene. Gun lubrication gelled and rendered weapons useless in battle. Firing pins stuck and operating rods jammed. Batteries for the vehicles and radios did not function and quickly ran down. Refer to the following Wikipedia page for details regarding the hardships and heroism of “The Chosin Few”:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Chosin_Reservoir

Although we won’t come anywhere close to the horrific conditions experienced by our troops during the battle, this match honors their service and sacrifice.

    Where:
    Sanner’s Lake Rifle Range.

    When:
13 January 2018. Sign-in and setup starts at 0800, match starts at 0900.

    Cost:
    SLSC members and non-members $5.

    Age Categories:
None. Match director may handicap shooters displaying excessive youth and vitality.

    Weather:
The worse the better. Match will NOT be canceled for weather unless conditions make roads completely impassable or unsafe. Rifle and shooter should be appropriately cold soaked prior to shooting. Arriving early to unpack your gear and help set up will improve your cold soak. Only historically accurate methods may be used to unstick frozen equipment!

    Divisions:
Highest total score amongst all shooters will determine the overall match winner. Allied and enemy scores will be tallied separately to determine the battle victor. Lastly carbine scores will be broken out to determine the overall carbine champion. Will the match winner and carbine champ be the same person? Will that person be you? Bring your carbine and find out!

    Equipment Needed:
Center fire rifle or carbine per the rules listed above.
30 rounds of ammunition for score plus sighting/backup rounds as needed. Recommend bringing at least 50 rounds in case of reshoots, etc.
    Spotting scope (optional, but helpful).
Shooting mat (also optional but helpful).

    Course of Fire Details:
NRA SR-1 targets at 100 yards.
Sighting shots: As many as needed in 10 minutes.
Prone slow fire: 10 rounds in 10 minutes.
Prone rapid fire: 10 rounds fired in two 5 round strings, 30 seconds per string. Loading and reloading will be off the clock.
Standing: 10 rounds in 10 minutes.
    Thirty shots total for score.
Multiple relays as necessary to accommodate all shooters.
Shooting the second relay after observing the first relay is recommended for beginners. Or just jump right in, you’ll have fun no matter what!

    Scoring:
100 points possible for each string, 300 points total.
Shooters ranked by highest combined score.
Ties broken by X's, then by highest individual string, then by fewest hits of lowest value.
Each string of 10 shots will be shot on a separate target.
Point value of the ring for each shot will be totaled (maximum of 100 per target).
Number of X's will be noted.
Holes touching a higher value ring will be scored as the higher value.
Firing fewer than required number of shots will be scored as misses.
Firing more than the required number of shots will result in the 10 hits of lowest value being scored.
Alibi reshoots will be allowed in the event of mechanical malfunctions. Mental malfunctions, on the other hand, are on you!

Other matches might fold for the cold or cancel for other climate-related excuses, but the Frozen Chosin match at Sanner's Lake is still ON for this Saturday! While it appears the recent perfect conditions may be letting up a bit this week, we won’t let the brutal mix of warmer weather and abundant sunshine stand in the way of having a great match. See you there!

Might be worth thinking of making this a movable match, weather dependent.

It’s been discussed, but the logistics of moving the match around to try to sync with the weather plus not being able to set a firm date for those who need to plan ahead make it difficult if not impossible. As usual with the weather in Southern MD, it’s better to just go with the luck of the draw...we'll complain about it no matter what happens!
