If it's not marked with a model number, then it's pre-1957. S&W switched to the model and dash system in 1957. I see that it has the Spanish "Marcas Registradas," which was added in 1948. So it's between those two years.

Does the serial number help to pinpoint anything? What does the "w" indicate?

I'm not entirely sure. The serial number is on the butt of the grip, while the number under the crane is just an assembly number.

On earlier guns, the letter prefix indicated what sized frame it was built on. I think by the time yours was made, S&W stopped doing that. It looks to be an I or J frame. What caliber is it?

Calls to mind something George C. Scott a la George Patton once said...in regards to a certain New Orleans entrepreneur.

He might be referring to this quote about the gun he was carrying.... "They're ivory. Only a pimp from a cheap New Orleans whorehouse would carry a pearl-handled pistol."

 Winner! That came to mind as soon as I saw the post but, I held back the monkey business until OP got his answer.

    Nice pistol, though.

Looks to be a Regulation police postwar pre model 31, by the serial number it falls between 1954 to 1955. Hope this helps.
