My Mother-in-law wants to purchase a handgun for home use. She is upper 70s and my Father-in-law left her a 6" barrel Taurus .357 revolver but she said its too heavy. She said she wants a .22 which would be lighter and easier to use. I am not a big fan of the .22 as a home defense round but anything is better than nothing. She lives all alone now and is old school so I have no doubt she will use it if she needs to. I pray she never needs to.

Please give me some ideas, what are good reliable small caliber pistols that can accept accessories like a laser/light combo?

I will be taking her to the range for complete safety/familiarization and plenty of shooting practice.

    Thanks.

She is familiar with wheelgun. Some alloy framed .22 revolver that accepts magnum cartridges may serve her better than transitioning to a semi.

Get her a wheelgun in .22 WMR, if she's hard of hearing it's all the better :D. 40gr FMJ's will put a hurtin on anyone standing in front of them.

Ditto. Taurus makes a nice 9-shot .22 Magnum revolver in several barrel lengths.

i carry the .22 MAG made by taurus. great gun for up close confrontations so long as shot placement is focused and PRACTICED. that being said, their customer service and quality control service absolutely SUX. S&W has some pretty good wheelguns, pricey but guaranteed.

    Revolver over a semi pistol.
    Less to go wrong.
Less chance of a accidental discharge.
Although a 22 is not the ideal caliber for SD. As long as she can point, aim and control it comfortably. It's better then a gun she would have trouble shooting.
    What about a 22 mag or even a 380?
Maybe have her try these at a range to get a feel for them.
In the end whatever she feels best with will be the right choice.:)

Buy her a .32 magnum. A smidge more power than a standard .38, and with less recoil. More reliable centerfire round than a rimfire .22. Can also shoot .32 longs for even less kick, I believe (but I'd stick with the mags).

There is a Ruger SP101 in .32 or .327 mag (which will shoot .32 as well):

    And from Smith:

Click that first smith link, and scroll down to read the comment by rsanluis about .38 vs. .32 and buying a gun for his wife. It says it all.... the .32 mag ammo can be harder to find, but the .32 long isn't so bad. If she loads with .32 long, there are some decent wadcutter loads for self-defense.

Oh, here's a wide selection of .32 Ammo:
