You can avoid the handgun issue in MD by doing this:

Convert your AR Pistol into a Rifle.

Pull the Pistol Upper off and install a 16" or longer HBAR upper (MD Legal). If the AR Pistol has an SBA3 Brace, you can remove the brace and install a standard M4 collapsible stock.

Get rid of the bullet button. It's does nothing in regards to MD Law.

Now you have a HBAR carbine that is 100% MD Legal. Just can't have a folder (collapsible is ok), or a grenade launcher on it.

    SBA3 is $120
HBAR Uppers (No Bolt or Charger) is $300

If you bring a handgun and get into a simple car accident, or vehicle break in, can cause you serious issues of they find a handgun in MD.

When you get back home you can change the AR Carbine HBAR back into a Pistol.

I just assumed that a rifle would be more difficult to bring while traveling interstate, especially into Maryland. I was not aware of the heavy barrel law. So one of my rifles is set up with 16" Heavy Stainless fluted barrel with a compensator threaded on. Is the Maryland legal?

Yup. Aditionaly if you had a "light barrel" rifle in .300 you would also be fine. the HBAR requirement only applies to .223/5.56 rifles.

That gun is MD Legal if the gun is marked HBAR or is advertised by the manufacturer as being an HBAR.

Just can't have a grenade launcher or a folder hinge installed.

And the Bullet Button can inadvertently get you into problems . Fixed magazines over 10 round capacity ( centerfire) are themselves banned .

But in light of above , back to your heavy bbl AR plus prefered flavor of carry pistol for use on rest of trip .

Plus of course anything else for recreational or hunting use while you're here .
