So here is my Pawn shop find. M1 Garand. Barrel is marked 52. Trying to find out what it is and what its worth. Came in from a guy with a bunch of uniforms and vintage military items. But that doesn't mean anything. Im hoping theres some M1 gurus on here that can help out.

Here are the markings I can see.

Stock: A. Thats it, just an A on the whole stock.
    Bayonet lug: 7
    Op rod: D36382 SA
    Barrel: S-A-3-52
Rear receiver: us rifle cal 30m1 springfield armory 4288681
Right side receiver under stock: A44A D6528291 43
    Bolt: D28287- 125A s-D6 and a diamond shape

    Any help would be appreciated.

Sling is wartime, a good plus. Springfield 4 million series is fairly late production. Parts are mixed, so it's possibly a CMP rifle or Korean refurb. More knowledgeable people than me can fill you in there. As for the rifle itself, prices start at 1,000 for a beat down rifle and only go up from there. Again, I'll leave that to more knowledgeable folk.

The receiver is a 1952 date of manufacture so it's at least very possible the barrel is original to the receiver. The rest I can't decode but the rifle probably went through at least one armory rebuild...either the barrel was still within specs to be left alone or the correct dated barrel was installed simply by happenstance. It was built during a time when the military was converting to non-corrosive ammunition so it may never have been used in this rifle.

The song is obviously either from old stock or possibly a reproduction. By 1952 the military was issuing web slings rather than leather.

You have what looks like a great rifle. M1 Garand's are maybe the most magnificent rifle ever designed and built and super satisfying to shoot.

A 4.2 is semi-rare as most went to Korea. Are there any import marks on the barrel? (Blue sky, etc)

    How does the barrel gauge?

    4.2s are cool IMHO.

    Very nice Garand - Jealosus!!!

I'm jealous. It'll be months before I get mine and I hope it looks half as nice.

I have an order in for a Special-Rack. Last night I saw they updated the status of them.

I am waiting to hear back from CMP if my purchase package made it in before the cut-off.

I am about ready to say f-it and make a trip to Alabama.

That is a great looking rifle. I agree with Orlando and Blacksmith101 above about information/description. Seek out the CMP forum, lots of good solid info there.

Really great looking rifle, mind saying what you gave? I'm guessing anywhere from 900 to 1100 nowadays money providing the muzzle is 3 or less.

I initially had little interest in them until a vintage rifle club shoot years ago. The M1 was the only rifle I could hit anything with (excellent sights and a decent trigger). The Mosin and the Enfield not so well. I now have two M1's from CMP and they are fantastic. I heartily recommend getting one or two from CMP before they are all gone.

Until you experience your first “Garand Thumb”. LOL.

My first was at my DCM qualifying in ~1983. It only takes one time to learn to keep your body parts away from heavy, moving machinery.....:o

My first one was when I was a 16 year old junior ROTC cadet. SOP for inspection was to bring the rifle to port arms and lock the bolt back. After the inspecting NCO returned it I released the bolt but didn’t get my thumb out of the way fast enough. I only did that once.

Scott duff in m1 grand: post wwII shows examples of 4.24 serial nos paired with barrels starting 3 53. Your serial number places shows barrels stamped may, july 53.
I would bet this barrel is original to the rifle.
The receiver drawing number is correct for this rifle.
The receiver heat no.A 44 A shows up 20,000 units later than your rifle but they appear all over the board, many not reported and A39B and A45A appearing on may and july barrels with your receiver drawing number.
Appears to be restocked, but would need more pics of any marks.
Trigger guard earlier milled example vs stamped for a 52 or 53.
All in all i think you have a beautiful rifle.
