Hi all, I've lurked the forum for several years, but haven't posted much. (Generally more on k98kforum) Here's a recently acquired unicorn I thought I'd share. My buddy found it out in the wild and I promptly talked him into selling. This is pretty in the weeds for mauser collecting:
Matching S28 rifle (The bolt is depot-matching, but I believe still only the second known matching s28) The S28s were secretly made in Kar98b (gew 98 length, k98k style sling and bent bolt) configuration by an unknown firm (most likely DWM) in the Weimar era. My second S28, but great shape and solid stock, despite a strange stock repair (possible goofy duffle cut)
Lots of "S28" markings and markings from both Spandau and Hannover depots on the stock. Note the "1920" stamp- normally a property mark to denote arms in gov't hands at the time of the forced weapon buybacks in Germany. This rifle's stamping was done to obfuscate the fact that the rifles were secretly produced in defiance of the Versailles Treaty. The use of imperial inspection markings (Crown/O) was further subterfuge. Anyway, just wanted to share some pics of something that rarely shows up.
