OK, so I only travel to MD every few years, as I live on the other side of the country. I build firearms as my hobby.

I read all 33 pages of this thread: it seems to me that you can avoid these restrictions by sticking to obscure firearm designs(the ones not listed by name). Examples of what I mean would be the PE-57, VZ-58, etc. Is this correct?

Also, where do the CETMEs fall into this whole thing? They're similar to HK91s, have some limited part interchangeability, but are not listed by name. Being fixed stock and not having a flare launcher or folding stock, they would pass the "feature" test. But what I'm not sure about, is whether or not they're close enough to an HK91 to fall under the named ban.

I have an AK-74 and live out of state. I bought it after the ban went into action. I'm guessing I cant legally bring it into the state when I move to MD. So can I just make it into a pistol or SBR it? Will that work? Thanks.

If you made it into a pistol, you'd be creating a SBR, too. Rifle->pistol=SBR.

You could have it in the state as an SBR.

    but not in pistol format?

If the AK was originally made as a rifle, it is illegal to make it into a pistol. This is Federal law. If a receiver is made into a rifle first, it may then never legally be made into a pistol. If it is made into a pistol first, it may later be made into a rifle and then back and forth as much as you want.

You can, however, make it into an SBR and bring it here.

Ok Wow thanks for letting me know. I have a trust so I can just file a form 1 soon and get it approved by moving time (May). Hopefully. Do you know of anyone that will do work on it to convert to SBR? Thanks.

It is against Federal law to convert a rifle into a pistol. You can make it into an SBR.

But if it was originally built as a pistol, then converted to rifle, it can go back to being a pistol

    New poster here, Hello!
So I have been confused about MD gun laws for a long time but after reading through majority of this thread... I think I may know the answer to my question.

Could someone please confirm I understood the laws and requirements correctly?

A Semi-Auto shotgun with a collapsible/adjustable pistol grip butt stock is legal. But a folding one is not.

A short barrel shotgun should be legal unless the barrel is below 16 inches. Correct?

I was looking at purchasing one of these auto defenders, put an adjustable/collapsible pistol grip stock on it but that wont be possible now since it is below the 16in barrel length.

For shotguns, 18'' is the barrel length limit. Anything less is a short barrel shotgun and needs to be bought on a NFA form 4

You're confusing the rules for centerfire rifles with shot guns. There are some shotguns banned by name. (The ones you linked are not listed). But they are Short Barrelled Shotguns and are subject to a $200 dollar tax stamp.

    Short Barreled Shotgun
    (1) "Short Barreled Shotgun" means a Shotgun that has one or more barrels less than 18 inches long; or
    (2) A Weapon that has an overall length of less than 26 inches long and was made from a Shotgun, whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise.
