If the politicians can restrict free speech in this regard, there is no speech that can't be restricted.

This issue is really exposing the leftist, statist grabbers for what they are—enemies of the BoR, and the freedoms protected by it.

It's for 3D printers. Cody Wilson has more than just AR lowers at his site.

    Good overview at ABC: https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sta...ication-blueprints-3d-print/story?id=56817152

    Many thanks, sir.

These files are for 3D printing of AR lowers? Polymer, or machining aluminum? Both/neither?

It's .stl and other CAD files for AR recievers, 1911s, the Liberator (wholly 3d printed shitty pistol) and some other stuff. Wilson plans to grow the library over time and has purchased machinery to take measurements of physical objects (ahem guns) and make them into CAD files that will allow for machining or printing of guns and gun parts.

He put all of this online years ago, and the State Department shut him down pronto, claiming he was in violation of ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) because he was making "defense material" available to foreign powers.

He and the 2AF sued, (their claim was very similar to the lawsuits over PGP encryption software that they also tried to control with ITAR when it first came out years ago - it's a speech issue and distribution of computer code is protected speech) and the Defense Department caved last month. They said that they decided that non-fully automatic firearms of .50 cal and less are not "military weapons" and that they would amend the ITAR so that these files would no longer be covered. After that happens, anyone in the US can legally post stuff like this on the internet. They also granted a temporary license specifically to Wilson and his companies to distribute these files before they get the regulations changed.

    Hilarity and panic ensues.

I have to admit I haven't at all kept up with this. What's going on here?

Anyone willing to do my homework for me? :D

May 5, 2013 - Cody Wilson of Defense Distributed (DD) fires the Liberator, the first working 3D entirely printed firearm. Files are posted on their site, defdad.com

3 Days later, US State Department forces Defense Distributed to take their plans for the Liberator and other gun files off of their site. They did this claiming DD was violating ITAR restrictions.

2015 - Defense Distributed sues the State Department for abridging their free speech rights, as the plans are code, and therefore speech. They go for a preliminary injunction against the government. They raise funds for the legal fight via selling the Ghost Gunner, a desktop CNC milling machine (They've made over $8,000,000 in doing so since 2014).

2015 - 2018 - Case continues with each court denying the preliminary injunction. Appeal made to SCOTUS. SCOTUS kicks it back to 5th circuit to be argued on merits.

April 2018 - Government approaches DD with a settlement.

June 2018 - Settlement is accepted. DD will be allowed to share its files once again. Government is in process of updating ITAR. The settlement with DD mentions that they do not view common semi-auto firearms .50 cal and under as inherently military items. DD was also paid about $40,000 from the government (DD spent half a million in legal stuff).

July 2018 - Settlement announced by DD. Defdist.org and defcad.com return and barring more legal intervention, DD will release their original files that were taken down in 2013 and open a platform for anyone to contribute any type of CAD file or other blueprints on 8/1/2018.

DD was aided by the 2nd Amendment Foundation and had representation from Alan Gura, Matt Goldstein, Joshua Blackman, and others.

The Brady's are in freakout mode and are trying to get an injunction against the settlement.

    Hahahahahaha. From the complaint:
    16.
Defense Distributed was started by Cody Wilson, a self-proclaimed anarchist, who believes that “governments should live in fear of their citizenry.”
The company’s objective is for everyone in the world to have access to guns and to make gun regulations impossible.
After publicizing the Settlement Agreement, Wilson said that “common sense gun reforms” would no longer be possible and posted a picture of a tombstonein the ground, with the phrase “American Gun Control.”
