The next field target match will be August 4th at the WAC-IWLA near Damascus, MD! Field target is a lot of fun and the course is in the woods therefore nice and shady. That makes for a great day of shooting! If you don't already shoot Field Target, come give it a try. There is no pressure on new shooters and everyone is willing to help.

If you have the slightest interest in Field Target, or you just enjoy plinking, please join us! Bring whatever air rifle you like and have a good time.

See the chapter website (http://www.damascusiwla.org/) for directions, and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

    What is “Field Target”

Oh, that is quite easy to answer (not afiliated with the above mentioned club, though). You use an air rifle with optics to shoot lifesize steel shilouettes containing a so-called "kill zone". You hit the little spot, they drop.

Fun part is, you are limited to air rifles, usually of .177 cal with a defined muzzle energy (12ft-lbs when you are playing with the redcoats) and need to hit the target at a distance between 12 and 50yds causing interesting wind and ballistics calculations.

As you can see, the airrifles all have a big stovepipe on top (read: scope). With side paralax, it is used to gauge the distance and then fire according to predetermined ballistics table.
All in all, it is a fun and very instructive hunting simulation for small game and you gain a bunch of skills in external ballistics and "long range" shooting without having to find a 600+ yds range.
