    Are you having problems?

i purchased your sks book at the pig roast knowing sks was on my short list so i found one . I was told it had a problem with jamming up it needs a cleaning from what i can see as of yet. a friend with a gun shop let me take it home and play with it see if its worth fixing then come back and talk money so i thought id start with gauge first

Thank you. so it looks like I may want the no go and or field gauge

IIRC, you want the GO and FIELD.

IF it does NOT close on GO - too short headspace so don't shot it.
IF it does close on FIELD - too long headspace so don't shot it.
IF it closes on NO GO, it can still be shot, but the brass is questionable afterwards.

There should be a thread here from Clandestine on the proper use of gauges. Not sure if he covers 7.62x39...

Here is my opinion regarding the go/no go gauges that you need. First, a Go gage is always used to set headspace during a build. Yes, it is possible for a rifle to have short headspace but the probability of a mil surp having it is astronomically remote. The No Go gauge is a necessity if you want to insure the best accuracy and brass life out of the rifle. For the SKS, if you want to check to see if it has an eroded chamber , the Field gauge is the one to use.

Out of the hundreds of SKS's I handled and shot over the years, (including my bring back from 'Nam), most of them had chromed chambers and pistons which did not erode. Operationally, the ones that had the most problems, with gas leakage, where those that had the grenade launchers on them.

I think I still have a bag of SKS parts laying around. If you buy it, let me know and I will give it to you.
