Went to the range today and some other people pointed out that someone dumped maybe 300–400 live rounds in the trash. Not the “live duds”.

I took a hat full, about 250 or so, and checked them out. Hold your panties for a second... I’m not shooting them.

I recognized one of the projectiles because I also tried some YEARS ago. They are 308 flat point... for 30-30... 150gr. Some are fmj BT but also 150gr.

Pulled 15, all same weights and all 14.4-15gr of an unknown powder. I’ve seen powder that looks similar to this and it’s probably “lil gun” but I’m dumping because it’s not safe to assume/guess.

However... for poops and snickers, I put them in a case gauge checker and I had a dog... who’s name was BINGO! Pull em and I get decent brass (300blk headstamp” and a bunch of plinking projectiles.

You're right, that powder could be any kind of flattened ball powder but the weight is in the ball park. I use 15.0 grains of Lil Gun with pulled 150gn FMJ for plinking loads for 50 yard rapid fire. At least you got some free bullets.

The 300 Blackout is probably the most difficult round I have ever loaded. It seems the chambers are very tight. If the rounds even fit slightly tight in the gauge, I get problems with chambering. My guess is that the person who dumped those rounds bought some reloads or some formed brass and loaded them without a gauge. I only did that once. Disaster.

The problem was found pretty early in it's life as people started reloading. Some .223/5.56 brass is thicker than others and that will cause chambering problems. I think the 300 Blackout forum has a list of which manf. cases are ok to form and which are too thick. I'm just going from memory but I think the case neck could not exceed .335 or you would have problems.

Yep, PMC, Wolf and some other popular head stamps can't be used reliably for blackout. I've tried...they won't work. Another problem that I've noticed is that blackout is very picky about how the case mouth is finished even on Federal or LC brass. After cutting the cases down, the inside and outside have to be reamed or they will increase the diameter of the neck and won't feed reliably. I've found a trick of steel media tumbling them to knock the edge down a bit but I still get the occasional loaded round that won't fit in the gauge. It's a high maintenance caliber but worth reloading because of the VERY high cost of subsonic rounds.

If you are having issues with your brass. Try running it through a small base 223 sizing die this should make the cases small enough to work out of the ar.
I resize all my brass before I form it with my small base sizing die and haven't run into any issues yet. I also inside neck ream the cases

The 300 b.o. requires lot more work then just chilling the end of a 223 case off then running it through the sizer die.
