Don't know if it's cowboy legend or not, but Dad always told me his .308 Model 88 Winchester had a detachable magazine because you could use pointed bullets and not worry about your rounds being bullet to primer in the tube.
I do know for fact that dad bought it in Cuba while was in the Navy, and it came back to the states in an armory on the U.S.S. Intrepid. Yes, the Intrepid that is now a museum in N.Y.

That is really cool. There was one on Armslist I was considering trying to pick up. I had been looking at the Henry .410 20" lever shotgun, but wasn't fond of how it loads, like a Marlin 60, so I passed. I have some 223 ammo not that I have an AR and have always wanted a lever gun. Beautiful looking rifle.
