The P-64 & Makarov are more alike than different. A better analogy would be to compare a Beretta 1951 to a Luger.

An East German Makarov will hold its value and therefore command a premium in any resale market better than the P-64.

If the OP has the finances, I'd suggest to buy both.

This 2 volume set by Henry Brown and Cameron White is an excellent reference on the PM, great pics, background/history and detail info:
