I have a strange question for the 1911 lovers here.....

Do any of you prefer to shoot a GI setup over the others? I sure do. I like the standard grip safety and simplicity of the GI sights. My comparison is my RIA GI models vs my Ruger SR1911 commander. I had them all out today and shot them back to back. I can honestly say that I prefer the GI setup over the fancy stuff. The only thing I did to the GI guns is a little bit of silver sight paint on the front sight to make it a bit more visible.

    Am I alone in this?

People like different formats in the 1911...one size does not fit all. I personally do not care for the 1911-A1 grip safety. I do not shoot as consistently with it or any grip safety with a similar profile (ex. Sig). I do like the original 1911 spur grip safety and a bobbed hammer. Throw in an accurizing, trigger work and high visibility sights and I like it. Just built one like that and surprisingly, for me, it has been lots of fun to shoot.

You can only try the different formats and see what works for you. I wouldn’t let anyone tell you what is best...get your feet wet. Buy a RIA GI (1911-A1 format is what they and most others sell) or other make. Shoot it and see if you like it. If not, buy a spare grip safety, shape it like the original 1911-A1 spur grip safety, fit the safety lugS, bob the hammer just enough to prevent hammer bite. Shoot it and see the modification helps, probably will. It not, put the original grip safety back in and safe queen or sell it.

Since I hit 50 this year, it's been about 20 years since I could see the front sight clearly on any handgun. The smaller sights are not my friends.
