I think this is a good compromise of balancing technology with cost. The TP solution was far more comprehensive, but it was also riding the bleeding edge of what was possible, and cost like it did. The BDX also seems like it may arguably be more useful to hunters, since you can scan with your rangefinder rather than have to muzzle everything with your rifle.
