With summer here, many MDS members travel to other states with their firearms by both air and car. I try to keep some docs with me when traveling to minimize possible issues with both LE and airline personnel.

What do you carry as far as documents?

    Here are some of mine:

    1. Proof of ownership of firearm
    2. FOPA SS 926A
    2. GFSZA
    3. BATFE opinion on GFSZA
    4. DOJ opinion of FOPA travel through airports
    5. MSP DC letter
    6. MD AG opinion on loaded magazines
    7. Copy of my 03 FFL license
    8. Copy of airline firearm policy (airline specific)
    9. PDF for each state I will be in from www.handgunlaw.us
10 State AG reciprocity list (official proof) added
    11. Digital Voice recorder (Mr. H)
    12. Standard size business card with the 2nd Amendment printed on it with a Gladestine flag on the back..
    (Name Taken)

What else do you MDS members carry with you?

I keep all these in my small Gunvault travel safe either in my vehicle or in my checked bag with my firearm if flying.

It may be viewed as overdoing it, but there is no harm in carrying all these docs just in case.

Please add to the list as I'm sure I've missed some.

ETA: all my CCW permits !

Great question, and one everyone should consider!!

I keep a small portfolio with copies of all my purchase records, copies of my permits (and related correspondence), training, DC letter, copy of FOPA, MD AG opinion on magazines, and up to date printouts from handgunlaw.us for any states we're planning to visit.

I keep a long and short cable lock handy, should they be needed.

I also keep a small voice recorder just in case I feel the need.

The only thing I don't have (and should) is information for an attorney.

I forgot. Print out a list of each states' reciprocity list from the state AG site. Nothing more official than that.

The other sites' info (handgunlaw or usa carry) are not official.

I think I have like 5-6 out of those 9. It would be useful to have these. I might have to scrape these up and get the missed ones added. It would be nice to have one large pdf with all said documents readily available. Except for the MSP DC. I have that on file, printed and in my phone.

You all are much better organized than I am. I only travel by car. I carry nothing but my CCW. I probably should, but I don't. I try to make sure that there is no reason to stop and search me and my vehicle.

I don't know what made me laugh more, the snarky attitude or the "gladestine" flag comment. :lol2:

When I travel with my guns (which is virtually everywhere that I do not have to go through a metal detector), I just have my regular ID (DL), my several CCW permits, and that's it. Frankly, I think carrying receipts for purchases of guns is way overkill. Has anyone ever been challenged as to their ownership such that they had to furnish proof of ownership during a traffic stop ? In my 15 years as an LEO, the only time I might have even questioned that would be if the person seemed too young, or I was following a more specific report about a stolen gun.

Again, as has been said many times on this forum, you do not, and should never, agree to allow a search of your vehicle or home.

This is about all kinds of travel, not just traffic stops. Ever been through an airport in NY or NJ.? Travelers have been asked by LE for proof of ownership in the past.

It's easier to carry the paper work than get hassled IMO.

Again, if you're traveling, who needs the hassle? Not me. The list of docs talkes an hour or so to collect, print them out and put in your travel safe.
