On the other hand, is there a reason that citric acid would be better than glycolic acid? Now I'm curious about using Oxi-Clean...has anyone tried it?

It would be awesome if I could just switch to oxi clean. We buy it a Costco in the giant box and it takes us a year to go through it. The less stuff I have to keep stocked around the house the better!

That might be the worst acid-base chemistry explanation from a “scientist” I’ve ever read. :lol2::lol2:

Guilty as charged! :lol2: That's a microbiologist's take on acid-base chemistry some 20 years after biochem... I'm glad there are people that do that for a living, and I'm equally glad it's not me!

Seriously though, these are weak organic acids as sold, and we're diluting it even further. If I keep concentrations and contact time reasonable, I think the brass will be ok. I was thinking more about the "non-ionic surfactants" and if it would interfere with the Dawn... but, it's sold as a dishwasher cleaner so it must be compatible with other detergents...

Anyway, I just finished my first ever wet tumble... ~95 40S&W cases with 2 lbs stainless steel pins, ~1 TBSP (30 ml) Dawn dish soap and ~1 TSP (5 ml) Oxi Clean Triple Action Booster. Filled with warm water (3.3 L... ~0.8 Gallon) and tumbled for 2 hours. I have cases spread out in the oven (175F for 30 minutes). I'm dealing with stainless steel pins now... a PITA, but I'm using a large refrigerator magnet to pick up strays. I see wet tumble as being cleaner and less dusty that vibratory/corn cob media... at least for me.... and this is the first one...

I'll get pictures of the cases tomorrow...

This is NOT the Oxi Clean in the big box. That's sodium percarbonate. I believe that works by adding water to liberate hydrogen peroxide... which is what cleans. This stuff is marketed as Oxi Clean Triple Action Booster. ..I bought it because it was the third store I had been to looking for Lemi Shine and I didn't want to go home empty handed... this stuff was on sale for $3.28... sold!

Here's what it looks like for reference:

Guy takes the range position next to you.

He says, "Hmmm... It smells like pee around here!"

You say, "Oh, that's me. I tumble my brass in my piss. It's cheaper than Lemi-Shine!"

I thought you were just the homeless dude at the range... :D

Anyway... and the results are in for Oxi Clean "Booster" (see attached). I'd used vibratory/corn cob media for decades, but I must say... this is looking pretty good. Maybe even say "the wetter the better!" The inside of the cases are much better than dry media ever looked.

That said, I was back at the store today and ran into one of the stockers... he brought me right to Lemi Shine Boost (next to an end-capper since it's beng discontinued). It was funny, because I was asking for either that or Citric Acid and this is what he brought me to. Soooo... I have ~250 45ACP cases tumbling right now with Lemi Shine... :)

One thing I'm noticing about pin cleaned brass. I bought a couple K of 9mm once fired. It's so clean and smooth, I'm fighting suction on my D550 in the powder funnel stage.

    Fully aware

Getting cases shiny doesn't make them perform any better and is taking up time you can be doing some other reloading chore. It's like smoking, you really can quit - if you want to. :innocent0

John, I am 100% aware that shiny brass isn't better brass, but I like it better.

I can also say that I haven't had a cigarette since lunch on Thursday and while that hasn't been easy (I'm trying it out so far but planning to quit for good), not wet tumbling would much more difficult.

The amount of lead dust that i psychologically inhale just from being around dirty brass is unbearable.

    Good luck on the quitting.
About a dozen years ago, I went to a hypnotist for smoking cessation. What a ripoff. I knew that day, I would either stop smoking "painlessly" or stop period. Coming out of the hypnotist's office, I never needed a cig more! But I decided I needed to quit. And I did. It was a year of misery, but I succeeded. I wish you the best.

I have that issue. It eventually starts to build up copper on the funnel. Just clean your funnel with a scotch brite pad when that happens. Another thing I do for instant gratification is rub a wee bit of imperial sizing wax on the funnel when it starts a stickin'.

I quit in 1987 cold. I had sever bronchitis and a high fever and they put me in the hospital. My wife leaned over my bed and said, "Are you going to quit now or do you want me to be a widow."

I tried all the fancy stuff of the day. Cigarette holders with various size holes in them, Nicorette gum (man, that stuff really tasted bad) and cigarettes that had air holes in the filters. Nothing worked except going cold turkey and sticking with it. I can't stand to be around a cigarette smoker these days but pipe smoke doesn't bother me.

Now, back to polishing brass. I don't polish anymore, just clean. If it has stains, who gives a hoot? I will admit, in my early days of reloading, I use to polish cases with chrome polish by hand. The old man thought I was nuts. As I got older, and time was more important, I have cut out stuff that I don't really need to do so I can do the things I want to do.

Thanks. I will do that. It's killing my F'd up shoulder. :)

A friend of mine who wet tumbles said the dawn cleans the cases almost too well, it strips off any kind of lubrication that may be on the case. De-greases it, in a sense.

He started using Lyman turbo sonic cleaner in place of Dawn, but still uses the citric acid. Another friend throws them in a vibratory tumbler after wet tumbling and drying. Just long enough to get some media through them to add a little lube back to the cases.

I do a final tumble with walnut and Nu-Finish. No sticking...

I deprime with a universal depriming die, wet tumble, size, then tumble in walnut to get rid of the sizing lube.

I don't care so much about "shiny" as I do clean. I think cutting down on the grime adds longevity to your equipment and the moving parts work better. Also, fewer contaminants in your reloads... provided you rinse these additives off the brass you're processing!

I feel your pain about quiting smoking! I started smoking around 1979 during a Navy cruise... $2/carton while we were underway. I smoked until about 1985. It took me 3x to quit. The last cigarette I had was a couple of months after I had officially quit the 2nd time around... I asked a friend for a cigarette at a bar and he gave me a stale Marlboro Light. I only had a couple of beers that night but woke up with a splitting headache that lasted two days... that was 35 years ago. You can do it!

Maybe I'll try a little toss in the walnut. Never thought of that.
