Congrats Paula! You were very close last time but were tortured by magazine issues. Glad you were able to get over the hump.

Sounds like a great event. Lots more on the calendar this fall so hope everyone is able to make it to another event soon!

After-Action Report for Annapolis Appleseed 22-23SEP18

AAR from AAFG (Annapolis, MD) 22-23 September, 2018

As Saturday dawned grey and mild, the line was full for a Sold-out Two-day Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship Clinic in Annapolis, MD. With us were return Project Appleseed participants, and many "First-timers" along with an Air-Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (J/ROTC) class from Smyrna, DE. After the introductions & safety brief, we kicked off the event.

Saturday was challenging as we were working through many gear issues, but the progress from the Saturday AM Redcoat to the Saturday PM Redcoat was amazing! And, very gratifying to the instructor Cadre, folks were engrossed with the history!

Sunday dawned with all shooters returning for a rain-soaked Appleseed.
Gear issues plagues us again, as some rifles didn't like being wet it seemed... however never a complaint from our fantastic shooters!
    Everyone kept at it.
    A Rifleman Persists!
Many earned their Luther Blanchard patches, and Kee T joined the Maryland Rifleman list (with a 230!), and Damien R re-qualified as a Rifleman with a 225. Kee T and Steve W both cleared their Redcoats, Huzzah! Two more recipients of the much-coveted Maryland Front-sight patch.

All the shooters maintained a fantastic attitude, especially considering how challenging the weather was, huge improvements were made, and everybody had a lot of fun! Thank you very much to our host range, the Anne Arundel Fish and Game Association (AAFG) in Annapolis, MD. Check out their website

And last but not least, many thanks to my fellow instructors, whose positive attitudes and professional demeanor made this not only a fun, safe, and successful shoot. Thanks to Indecisive, Etervigila, BeSwift, and Aninha.

Two spots opened-up for the advanced centerfire known distance Appleseed event this Sunday, October 28. If you have been to an Appleseed before, but only shot "22@25" this is a great opportunity to stretch your skills and equipment out to 200-yards, lock-in DOPE on your rifle, and see if you are a 4-MOA shooter or better without a bench or bipod!

A post-13 Maryland-compliant HBAR AR, a pre-13 MSR like an M1A, or even your favorite 10-round mag-fed bolt action is probably begging to come out of the safe and see some action. And, unlike the rimfire long distance shoot, you don't need any optimized equipment. Weather is looking nice on Sunday as well - cool and sunny.

    Find more information here:

And for pics from the 200-yard rimfire event in September at the same location, check here:

AAR SOLD OUT Appleseed at BRGC 3/4NOV18

A cold, rainy morning did not deter several great Americans from coming out and showing up at the Berwyn Rod & Gun Club (BRGC), in Bowie, MD for a SOLD OUT 2-Day Project Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship Clinic.

After introductions & the safety brief, we got down to some shooting! After our first Redcoat, we moved on to Prone Steady Hold-factor training, and then moved on to putting sighters on the Squares target... and it was clear this was a talented group! After some history at lunch, we got back to marksmanship training - as the day progressed, the weather became clear and cold. By the end of the first day and a practice Appleseed Qualification Tests (AQT), we already had some great scores! Nine year-old Ailika had a 195! Two shooters were close at 207 (indicative of great things to come), and three shooters got it done - Kevin M had a 214, and Rich G and Matt H both put up a 219 right out of the box! Even more impressive, on our final Redcoat, four shooters cleared their target! Matt H, Ben C, Rich G, and Kevin M all earned their much-coveted Maryland Front sight Patches. :party29:

Sunday morning came, cold, clear and windy. After safety review and some more coaching, including NPOA (carding the sights) drills, we got down to some AQTs, with a break for lunch and some more history. Rifleman patches were earned during a very impressive session... check out these scores:
    Ben C scored a 214
    Matt H registered a 220 and 223
    Marty (Matt M) got 214 and a 212
    Rich G scored 225, 225, and 220
    Kevin M put up a 221, 211, 214, and a 231!
Marty also cleared his Redcoat joining the others that earned a MD Front Sight Patch. :gun7:
    Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

HUGE progress was made, and everybody had fun, and really enjoyed the history and heritage, too! Devlin M was voted the Shoot Boss's hero as the most persistent. Great job Devlin, keep at it.
Rich and Devlin volunteered to take Blue Hats and help with the program... THANK YOU!

Thank you very much to our host range, BRGC in Bowie, MD.
    Check out their website here.

And last but not least, many thanks to my fellow instructors Aninha and PB4Y1, who helped make this a safe and very successful shoot.

2-day Appleseed at the Anne Arundel Fish and Game (AAFG) December 1-2, 2018

We still have 7 spots open for the next 2-day Appleseed at the Anne Arundel Fish and Game (AAFG) Conservation Association in Annapolis, MD on December 1-2. We have a very strong instructor crew to guide you. Registration is available here: https://appleseedinfo.org/location/?locationid=9&eventid=5736

The perfect way to recover from one holiday and transition into another. A good chance to see if you can still get into seated and prone positions after a bit too much turkey and to see if the stuff you bought on Black Friday sales works as well as you hoped!

AAFG's rimfire range is excellent in the fall and winter - the shooting line is covered, the wind is blocked by the valley, and the shooting mats really warm up in prone (well, kinda). A little early for a weather forecast, but expect it will be in the mid-40s. We'll also be able to use the toasty warm clubhouse for lunch, bio breaks, and history. Fear not expectant Rifleman - if we are really lucky, the weather will be bad enough to open up shooters to the elusive and exclusive Winterseed patch!

Our last event at AAFG on November 10-11 produced two new Riflemen, 2 requalifying Riflemen, and 2 more knocking on the door, including a 12-year old first time Appleseeder that was ohhh so close to a patch with a 207! It was a cold and windy but worthwhile weekend on the line, helping save our nation.

This is a 22LR-only event so bring out your favorite rimfire rifle and see how it runs. Also a good opportunity to test your layered winter gear before you really need it. If you need anything, up to and including a rifle to shoot, we will have loaner gear available as well. You just need to come with good attitude and you will be guarunteed to leave with at least a T-shirt, a chamber flag, and a new perspective on what it means to be an American.

If you can't make this one or it is a long drive, our last shoot of the year will be at AGC in Marriottsville, MD on December 8-9: https://appleseedinfo.org/location/?locationid=497&eventid=5664. That event is both rimfire and centerfire. So a great opportunity to run your favorite rifle!

We will post the events for 2019 very soon as well. Let us know if you have any questions.

    2019 Schedule Posted for AAFG

12 Appleseed events for 2019 at the Anne Arundel Fish and Game (AAFG) Conservation Association in Annapolis, MD have been posted:
    https://appleseedinfo.org/schedule/?qstate=MD&state=Maryland.

Looks like the weather at AAFG on December 1-2 will be pretty reasonable - high 40s, maybe even the low 50s. So if you want that Winterseed patch, you might want to sign up for one of the future shoots!

We'll create a new 2019 thread as more dates at other clubs are confirmed.

After Action Report: AAFG (Annapolis, MD) Dec 1-2 2018

AAR from AAFG (Annapolis, MD) 22-23 September, 2018

We had TWENTY students on the line on a COLD, windy and RAINY Saturday. 15 Alexandria VA Boy Scouts and their leaders made the journey for an outstanding weekend of history and marksmanship. We had a few scouts on the line that had been to several Appleseed events mixed with a larger number of less experienced marksman and even some first time shooters.

Students showed steady improvement through the first Red Coat target, sighters, and positional practice rounds and ended Saturday on a strong note with two cleared Red Coat targets and two Maryland Front Site patches - Huzzah! We also did the first two strikes of the history to provide people an opportunity to thaw-out in the cosy clubhouse.

All students returned to the line on Sunday and we were able to conduct relays for 3 AQTs, cover the third strike of the match, and engage morning and afternoon Red Coats.

By days end we had THREE Rifleman patches to hand out in addition to yet another new Front Site patch! Congrats to Lyn, Andrew (high of 227 - huzzah!), and Erin for joining over 500 folks that have qualified in Maryland.

We also had one newly minted Rifleman step up and take an Orange Hat to become an instructor in training. Thanks to Erin for stepping up and congrats on the high score for the weekend of 228...with no sling!

Many others earned their Luther Blanchard patches, well earned on such a wet and cold weekend (and most of the scouts camped Saturday night in the rain). All the shooters maintained a fantastic attitude, especially considering how challenging the weather was, huge improvements were made, and everybody had a lot of fun! We can't thank the parents and volunteers enough for keeping the scouts safe and organized.

Thanks to BeSwift, CatGravity, ABCgarand, Indecisive, CCI Dispenser (first shoot as an Orange Hat - well done!), and MedievalEngineer (welcome back - hope you can make more events). Also great to see Cold Warrior (Dave) and Aninha in a dell one last time.

AAR: Marriottsville, MD (AGC Baltimore) Sat-Sun Dec 08-09, 2018

The last Appleseed event of the Maryland calendar year went extremely well thanks to the excellent instruction provided by WhyWon. While it started cold and stayed cold both days (30ºF), we had 16 shooters on Saturday, and 13 shooters on Sunday, most of whom were first time attendees.

Despite the chilly conditions, all our Appleseeders did a phenomenal jobs of learning and applying the 6 Steps, SHF, and NPOA as the weekend progressed.

Dave F. not only qualified as rifleman with scores of 218 and 232, but by scoring a 232 with irons and clearing his red coat target, he earned his MD Distinguished Rifleman patch - joining very select company!

John F. qualified multiple times with great scores using a scoped rifle (211, 233, 226, 226) and also cleared his red coat to earn the MD front site patch.

Charles E. S., a returning Appleseeder, likewise requalified multiple times with a scope (213, 229, 232) and also earned the MD front site patch.

Thanks go to our safe and teachable attendees, AGC Baltimore and their vigilant and courteous RSOs for being great supporters of MD Appleseed, Bob and Jim for preparing and shuttling 20+ target frames to and from the range, and to Dan (Etervigila, IIT) for helping on Sunday including braving the elements to watch the line while WhyWon did history indoors.

    Maryland Appleseed 2018 Year-End Summary

Maryland had a very successful year bailing the ship! Thanks to all the students, instructors, and volunteers that made the year a success.

Some statistics to put 2018 in context:
    • 27 shoots held including one instructor/volunteer only shoot and one weekday “personal day” shoot at Berwyn; 3 events were sold-out and 7 more nearly so – always good to sign-up early for the shoots you want to attend
    • At least 289 students trained (more than 10 per event), not including walk-ons and late additions – let’s call it 300 and give a loud huzzah!
    • About 50 new rifleman and too many requalifying shooters to count – we surpassed 500 total rifleman in MD and are still growing!
    • At least 3 Distinguished shooters (scoring over 230 with irons or 240 with scope) and several more folks on the cusp
    • 2 Winterseed patch qualifying shoots with 5 Winterseed patches awarded
    • 2 long-range/known-distance patch qualifying events (200-yards) - one rimfire, one centerfire - with 10 qualifying rifleman/women, including perhaps our youngest-ever qualifier, a 10 year old young lady who was a perfect at 10-for-10 at 200 yards with a rimfire rifle!
    • So many Maryland Front-Sight Patches handed out that we need to make more!

Thanks to our dedicated volunteers and instructors we only had one shoot cancelled due to severe illness. We averaged 3 students per instructor across all our events due to strong instructor participation, which allowed for substantial attention to safety and quality of training.

We also grew the Maryland cadre of instructors and volunteers:

    • 1 new Shoot Boss (Cat Gravity)
    • 2 new Red Hats (Aninha and Catch-10-22)
    • 4 new IITs (Indecisive, CCI Dispenser, Powder Monkey, and Catch-10-22)
    • Several welcome border raider instructors: WhitePaladin (NY), Monkey and Missus Monkey (VA)
    • Several instructors coming back the program after absences (welcome back!)

Unfortunately, we also experienced several significant losses to our community – Cold Warrior, Aninha, and SouthSeasNurse moving to Florida and the passing of long time supporter John Pepper.

A huge thank you to all of the ranges that hosted us this year!

    • Anne Arundel Fish and Game Conservation Association (AAFG) in Annapolis
    • Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore (AGC) in Mariottsville
    • Berwyn Rod and Gun Club (BRGC) in Bowie
    • Sanner's Lake Sportmans Club (SLSC) in Lexington Park
    • Delmarva Sportsman Association in Suddlersville
    • Leetown IWLA in Leetown, WV
