    I am not sure why MSP feels that non-5.56 ARs are OK. Nothing in the wording for ARs says anything about caliber.

    Some listings DO mention caliber:

    (xviii) Famas semi–auto (.223 caliber);
    (xxxiii) Ruger mini–14 folding stock model (.223 caliber);
    (xxxiv) SIG 550/551 assault rifle (.223 caliber);

    ...patrols in the swamps were relatively short...it was very dark, spooky, wet, and the most difficult of the patrolling that we performed...a real challenge!

    Well, that brought back some repressed memories. That last week of Infantry school at Benning, when you're doing your final qualification with a couple of E-5/E-6 Rangers screaming at you the entire time while navigating at night thru a swamp...it sucked probably just as bad with an M-16 as it did with an M-14. I just know it was miserable.

    ...and is very concealable. Did I mention it is very concealable?

    You could EASILY hide one in a Prius or EVEN a Smart Car if you turned it sideways. Why a seven foot tall man could even put it under his trench coat. Damn things are almost invisible.

    The m1a... my biggest 10/1/13 regret.

    Way to bring back a dead thread!

    Here’s to hoping they chamber it in .30-06. Yes it’s need to be a different action and all that. But the heart wants what the heart wants.

    What magazines would that use? BAR mag conversions have been tried for Garands before, and tended to have bad feeding problems. Other than a few expensive specialty mags, there aren't any commercial ones made for long-action semi-autos.

    If it’s a native M1a in .30-06 it could be designed to use BAR mags from the get go.
    Maybe it would also feed interest in an AR based long action platform (I do see there are one or two).

    M1A receiver is 1/2" too short for .30-06.

    It's designed for the 7.62 NATO round. A 7mm-08 conversion would be easy, even a .243.

    I actually owned an early Noreen BN-36 (DI 30-06 AR-format rifle) for a while. An interesting novelty, but sort of filled a market gap between .308 and 300WM MSRs that didn't really need filling. Mags were ridiculously expensive proprietary designs.

    I did some tuning and got it to shoot well, but ended up selling it to buy a couple antique rifles.

    I was at myrtle grove a couple of weeks ago. The gentleman shooting beside me had an m1A in 6.5cm. He stated that it was MD legal. (Different caliber. )

    Yeah I’ve seen them. If it could be popular, that’d be awesome. Chicken and eeg problem though probably. It won’t be popular unless it can be at least AR-10 cheap and it won’t be AR-10 cheap until it’s popular.

    But I do think a long standard action AR COULD be useful and popular. A .264-06 would be sweet. Well, as would a .30-06.
