The old logic is to go for a 158gr .38+p LSWC. The theory is that they short barrel will not allow you to get the velocity for great penetration so you'll need to rely on grain weight. A JHP will of course further degrade penetration.

A few years back I got a box of Winchester .38 Special +P+ ammo that wasn't in the Ranger box. This stuff was hot. I am glad I never tried it in my alloy framed Colt. Out of a 4" GP100, recoil was stiff.

You might want to buy a box and test them.
