Sticking the rolled up finger of a leather glove in front of the hammer works just as well and is less painful.

Built several that way and it does cut down on the cussing.
It can usually cause enough damage to the front of the fcg pocket to cause the bolt catch to bind up... it likely won't 'break', but it doesn't take much to impinge the bolt catch..
I found these tools make the job very easy. I plan to build a few so it was worth it to me to have the right tools. The pivot pin tool is well worth the $6.
