My todo list includes a bunch of jobs that involve pins. It occurs to me that me and a press would do a better job than me and a mallet. But, how much press do I need? 1 ton, 2 ton?

    Pins, and/or Rivets??

If yes, 12 ton would be more than adequate.

What jobs are you needing this press for? A more detailed list would help in knowing what to recommend.

I have a beretta 21a I want to press the barrel off/on. I have a couple of ar gas blocks that I want to swap out. Stuff like that.

12 ton will be more than enough for all of that. With the added bonus of being quite handy if you ever get into the Kalashnikov patterned toys/kits. ;)

*The gas blocks on the AR's, if they're pinned - those should be a taper pin IIRC, so they only go out 1 way. A short starter punch and BFH is all you need to drive out the taper pin. A quick check with calipers should show which end of the pin is larger in diameter than the other.

12 ton from someplace like Harbor Freight, isn't that much (roughly $125, IIRC). So it's not too hateful on the pockets, and it can come in handy later on down the road.

okay, I'll throw this out there - the knowledge is deep and wide here.

I'm looking to make j-word jackets from pre-82 pennies. After annealing, what level of arbor press to draw the pennies into jackets?

Cheaper to use spent non reloadable brass.

I found a thread over on Cast Boolits about nearly the same thing. The conclusion is "bigger is better". Looks like I'll need some sort of holder, more substantial than PVC for the die and tool.

I have a 12 ton from Harbor Freight and while it hasn't been used a ton (pun intended), It is still going strong after 14 years. Cheap and effective. I pressed out all of the bearings and suspension bushings on two cars and have done other less stressful things with it.

How much press to fold a MAC flat? Because the one I use for AK flats doesn't do anything to 3.5mm sheet except deform it slightly and ruin it.

a hydraulic press is rather overkill for pins and small items. just use your bench vise

Just FYI, like chipd says, I use my large drill press for rivets (kydex and leather) and it is overkill for those.

I have a machinist friend I use for heavier items.
