  • Gun Rights Versus Anecdotes

Which side wins depends on whether one can reason or simply react emotionally.

For a while back in the Winter, a retired philosophy professor (who wants to remain anonymous) and I exchanged a few emails and, from him, snail mail, discussing gun rights. After not hearing from him for several months he very unexpectedly mailed me a large envelope containing forty-nine newspaper clippings with many reports of shootings and a few anti-gun rights op-eds (and, strangely, a pro-gun op-ed by John Lott). He also included a fund raising letter from the Brady Campaign, another one from the Children's Defense Fund Action Counsel, a magazine ad from the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence, and a hand written note. Especially surprising for their absence were any articles from scholarly source. Are there no scholarly articles in favor of gun control? He sent almost all anecdotes from mass media sources leaning heavily towards the New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer. One would expect better from university professor.

google is your friend, I am not.
When gun controllers say gun rights activists are driven by fear, they are projecting.

There are "scholarly" articles on gun control, but they are mostly either goobered or at best inconclusive.

Why? They are often bigoted, opinionated and extremely closed minded to any ideas contrary to the accepted dogma. In academia new ideas are not accepted until the old guard DIES OFF. Pasteur was ridiculed over his whacky notions on microorganisms. Madam Currie was marginalized over those crazy invisible particles. Everyone knew "the big bang" was idiotic as the universe is eternal and unchanging. Continental drift was the delusion of insane individuals.

The list goes on and on.

Not surprising when the "self aware intellectual elite" assert their mantra on you. He believes that he is converting a non-believer into the fold. If you reject his advances. He will find other reasons to not talk to you any more.

Years ago, when I paid more attention to the other side, it was evident that a lot of the anti "research" was not peer reviewed and sometimes was also funded by some anti group. People who have gone into the study of this with an open mind, like Kleck did when he started, have been led to results confirming what most of the gun folks believed.
