I've got a Colt Army Special 38. Smooth double action and very solid feel. No rattles and locks up good. It has a crack at the barrel end next to the cylinder (see pic). The crack stops where the crack meets the gun frame and does not extend further down the barrel past the frame. I bought as a shooter not a safe queen. Is this common? Should I be concerned about it?

I'm not a revolver guy, but that's something I'd probably ask a 'smith to give the once-over to just to make sure it's OK to shoot.

Perhaps it is a punch mark.
But if so, it's a really weird. Why not just pin the barrel?

Cant see enough for make a call. Can you take pics from other angles?

If its a crack the frame will fail next where the crack is, with repeated usage.

As a follow-up to my previous post, if it were mine, I wouldn't fire it without having it checked out. What looks like a punch mark could be a bulged and split barrel, maybe from squib damage or from modern loads that were too hot.

I see how the pic angle could make it look like a pinch. It is a real crack going fully through the barrel and stopping at the frame.

Looks like flame cutting. Flame cutting probably started the crack, then blow torches the crack with each shot. Look close you'll see where the frame is being flame cut at the barrel frame juncture. It is rounded there. I wouldn't shoot it until it is repaired.

Looks like the topstrap is showwing erosion too. This gun may have seen substantial use, with heavy loads. No way I'd shoot it like that. It should be spitting powder and lead out the side like crazy.
