Bought a cheap-$300 Horton 4 years ago- no issues- shoot it a lot and have taken several deer with it-seems to be built like a tank.

I shoot an Excalibur and love it.

However, with your neck/back injury, maybe you should consider a TenPoint. They have an "ACUdraw Crank device" that reduces draw weight to about 6lbs. They're pricy though.

Really looking to buy one also. But, some of these prices are insane. I understand buying quality, but is a $1100 bow that much better than a $700-$800 one?

    Good luck

Depends on how you rack and stack categories for comparison. Quality doesn't always follow price. But you'll usually need to pay for high rankings in specific combined categories (eg, weight, speed, noise, & accuracy). Depends on what's most important to you. Many good sources online and in print:

We've had good luck with our Parker Bushwacker its around $400+ or -....if you have the money to burn sure go buy a $1000 bow...but I bet at 20-40yds my bow will still kill a deer just as dead as $1000CB...lol

Horton is now out of business because of that the prices on remaining new units are heavily reduced. They came up with the reverse limb design and i love mine. I have had a parker cyclone for a while and did shoot it much, it was very long and extremely front heavy, so I sold it and got a good deal in the horton havoc. The havoc is great, short, balanced, anti dry firing and a good trigger. The Sportsman's guide also have a horton trt ultra light that was the top of the line in its time on sale for around 350. You are taking a small gamble because there is NO warranty but not much worse the buying a old gun. If you are on a budget then find a good deal on a horton.

As far as self defense its a one shot and run deal. A 2nd shot is extremely unlikely due to the complex loading and the stress of the situation. Don't let the walking dead show fool you, they are a whole lot harder to pull than Darrell make it out to be.

Leonardo Da Vinci invented the reverse limb crossbow. Centuries later, a Russian company, Armcross, started making them. They licensed the technology to Scorpyd who still still sells them -- pricey. Horton got the rights to make them later.

I have a Horton Vision, which has done well for me. I like that it is narrower, cocked or uncocked, than a conventional crossbow. It's center of mass is closer to your body too.

Horton went out of business because the owners had their hands in the cookie jar. Barnett makes one now too.

We have a Barnett "Jackal". Shoots a 20" bolt not the almost standard 22", but is the weight of the pricier carbon fiber crossbows without the extra cost. Will still take a deer.

I agree with mrdave2010. For the price of crossbows now, the Barnett Jackal does what you need just as much as some of the carbon ones. Of course its a little heavier but that's what muscles are for.

Surprised that I haven't seen anyone mention Wicked Ridge. Wicked Ridge is owned and manufactured by Ten Point, but their crossbows have a lower price point. The quality and customer service is still excellent, however.

I have the Wicked Ridge Invader and love it.

tenpoint crossbows only warranty the limbs for five years.

    excalibur warranty....lifetime...

You do not need or want these complicated compound CB's

watch the excalibur "Crossbow Examination" on the webpage

+1 for Barnett Jackal as a good budget crossbow. I bought a new one on eBay last year for around $280 including dot sight, cocking device was another $15 and worth every penny.

This crossbow is reasonably fast (315 fps advertised), accurate, and has a smooth, light trigger. If I had it do over again, would prob have got the package with crossbow scope rather than dot sight for (hopefully) a little better low light visibility. I didn't know this before I bought but the dot sight has 3 vertically aligned aiming dots which essentially amount to holdovers for 10, 20, and 30 yards with my arrows/broadheads.

Have taken two hogs and two deer with it, all complete pass-through shots, but wouldn't feel confident relying on it as a self-defense weapon.

Check out to start out, check out the SA Sports Fever at Sportsmans Guide for $135. I have one (bought at Dicks). I just upgraded the bolts and it's shooting few inch groups at 35 yards. I'm VERY satisfied with it.

Great hunting bow for the price.
