VA-ALERT
Surry County, ignoring their own resolution to the contrary, is getting ready to pass local gun-control!!
VCDL member Mark E. just alerted me to an article in the Smithfield Times stating that the Surry County Board of Supervisors has scheduled a public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would ban firearms in government buildings, parks, community and recreation centers, and at public events!
The newspaper says the hearing is on August 7, but the draft copy of the hearing announcement says August 5 (which makes more sense, as that is their regularly scheduled August meeting). We will advise what the correct date and time is in a future alert.
Surry County passed a resolution strongly supporting both the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and Article I, Section 13 of the Virginia Constitution UNAMINOUSLY on December 5, 2019. Signers were Michael Drewry, Judy Lyttle, John Seward, Kenneth Holmes, and Giron Wooden, Sr. The text of the resolution is at the bottom of this email.
We cannot let this betrayal go unchallenged!
Here is a link to the proposed ordinance. It is the same draconian crap we have seen in places like Alexandria, Fairfax, Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Arlington! It will do NOTHING to make citizens safer. It will do just the opposite and it has no exceptions for law-abiding citizens, with or without a CHP.
ACTION ITEM:
We need to contact the entire Surry County Board of Supervisors in full opposition to this underhanded scheme. Let’s call and email them!

Talking points:
* While resolutions don’t have the force of law, they do have the force of morality, honor, and trust. The Board of Supervisors effectively made a promise to the citizens of Surry and Virginia to protect our right to keep and bear arms with resolution 2019-38, which passed UNANIMOUSLY. Passing gun control breaks that promise. It’s not illegal, but it is immoral to do so.
* Localities that have passed similar ordinances have not seen a reduction in violent crime. In fact, the first locality to do so, Alexandria, saw shootings go up 40% immediately after the ordinance went into effect and that number has not returned down to pre-ordinance levels yet.
* Taking away someone’s ability to protect themselves from violent crime is NOT good for them or for the general public. The only beneficiaries are criminals, who don’t obey “gun-free zones”. Virginia Beach found this out the hard way when they had a massacre in one of their gun-free zones a couple of years ago.
* I urge you to vote AGAINST the proposed ordinance, honoring the promise you made on December 5, 2019l
