Went to install magpul grip on an extra lower i had. Turns out the bolt went in at an angle and stripped it.

Anyone know what tap size ill need to try and save this lower with?

Corrected by Chad in next post. Shows how many times I have changed a grip...

    It's 1/4-28

You need tap magic aluminum tap fluid and you need to go very slow. Even though it's aluminum you can break the tap.

If you're careful, and don't blow the walls out, you can step up to 5/16-24.

The area you're drilling and tapping is roughly .375-.380 in width.

You'll want someone with a milling machine to do the work.

If you went in sideways and stripped it I'd chase a regular 1/4-28 tap from the top down (start inside the lower) to straighten the threads. Then use the next longer bolt so it will grab good threads deeper in the bore. As long as it isn't shouldered you won't have problems.

    ^^^This is a good idea too.^^^

Use the good threads as a guide.

That is a solid plan but the angle and pocket depth of the lower won't allow this method unless you have a tap extension or a very long 1/4-28 tap.

You need to try and straighten out the messed up threads. Don't drill it oversize ilunless you are installing a helicoil. Those are the only good options.

U can use the same size treads and chase it from the inside the bolt will straighting the threads .
