Has anyone heard anything in regard to heightened security in schools across the country? I have not. Or is everyone just waiting for another school shooting to occur, to blame it on guns? It's truly amazing to me that after sandy hook, all the school shootings prior, and the presidents failed ban, that's where it ended. Our kids are no more safe than they were before these school shootings. I for one have a teenager in high school, 10th grade, and there is NOTHING stopping a psychopath from entering his school and doing the exact same thing as all the others. WHY IS THIS ACCEPTABLE? Are we as a people, along with our government so caught up in the political bureaucracy of gun laws we have all forgotten about the welfare of ALL our children? The reality is this is United States of America, and guns are not going anywhere. So why not shift the attention to actually protecting our kids while they are in school so we can once again trust they are safe and out of harms way while getting an education?

Because those who have the political capital / power to make those changes already have their kids in schools with decent security. Us plebes and our progeny are stuck with the status quot...at least until such time as we collectively replace those in power with others.

HoCo schools now keep your driver's license when you come in and give it back when you leave (not sure what all these disadvantaged minorities who can't afford driver's licenses for voting ID are supposed to use though :innocent0 ).

They also start all big gatherings off with a discussion of the location of exits like airplane attendants. I guess to help us run away in the most efficient way possible since self-defense is not allowed in Marylandistan.

When picking your children up from school early, you are now required to return outside the building to wait for them (don't ask what that is supposed to accomplish).

Doors are also locked and require you to be buzzed in (but we saw how effective that is).

In other words, they haven't done anything productive here. They have provided security theater to make the sheep feel safe again though.

I have seen a few news stories about school districts in free states allowing teachers to CC with pre-approval, but not nearly enough are ending the gun-free zone idiocy that attracts mass murderers.

Yeah, things have changed. We got a buzzer system at my school in hoco. Someone visiting has to press a button and wait to be buzzed in to the front office. They also added more video surveillance. For instance, when someone buzzes in the cameras automatically blow up on tv monitors from a bunch of small video captures to just the shot of the front lobby. All the doors are locked. We also have 16 mandatory drills this year instead of the usual 10 and they have expanded to include things like a "reverse fire drill"...a drill where a fire drill happens, but then students suddenly need to go back in to the building because of a thread from outside. I'm still not allowed to legally carry a firearm for the defense of my students, but some procedures and equipment is being changed for the better.

Of course, hundreds of kids are still vulnerable at any given time as they're outside for recess or PE...so locked doors only help so much. At some point they're going to have to pull their heads out of their asses and give teachers the tools to fight back instead of trying to lock kids away. It seems they've also included more options to a threat response. We've always had lockdowns, but now they're starting to mention movement and the option #3...fighting back....is starting to be brought up.

Lots of feel good security like video cameras. Camera's don't stop people.

But of course, it's not about safer schools, or making crime pay.

Oh the hummanity...who's going to protect all these kids at bus stops in the morning?

How about after school football and baseball? Who's going to inflate the safety bubble for those kids?

Crazy criminals are going to be crazy criminals. A locked door or camera isn't going to help.

Well this is a step in the right direction at least. It would be nice if more people knew about this, I sure didn't. Maybe I haven't heard of any of this because it doesn't pertain to my sons school in Hampstead, North Carrol.

Why not have an officer in elementary schools? Are the younger kids less important than the older ones, and why is this not nationwide? Imo it should be like going to the airport to get into schools, metal detectors, armed guards and all, so that if a threat were to arise it could be handled properly.
