i have an early 90's 870 - great tight gun. I have heard from some that the 870's quality has gone down in more recent years but the mossberg has held steady.

one thing i like about the mossberg is that the safety is ambidextrous

    Remington 870.

I've owned Mossberg 500(s), and I'll never keep another one.
Mossberg MAY have fixed the issue with the disconnect, but, I can't trust 'em.

My 500 went back to Mossberg, twice. The bolt would not lock in battery.
Sold it to a co-worker that knew the issue. He didn't care.

I've won a couple of Mossberg(s) and sold them as soon as I found a buyer.

I've NEVER had a problem with any of my 7 870(s)!!

Which one is better for home defense, and why? I personally prefer the Mossberg 500 because of the ambidextrous safety.

Actually there was a thorough evaluation of the two by a gunsmith that I found on this forum somewhere when I was doing the same research.

According to him, many more repairs and mods can be done without a gunsmith on the Mossberg. As well, some of the critical parts were better made. That's what led me to the 500.

Why not own both? I guess I'm biased to the mossy as I have owned several over the years but then again I have owned 2 870's that suited me just fine. I do prefer the Mossberg when using a standard style stock due to the tang safety and they just seem to always work and when they break you can fix them yourself. My 870 is no slouch though and has earned it's place on the old lady's side of the bed.

I went with the Mossberg and have not regretted it. For less than a basic 870, I got the Mossberg 500 with two different barrels.
