Its been a milder winter thus far here. And while we have some Juncos, chickadees and redbreasted nuthatch we also have some odd ball ones that I havent seen before. This year we have an eastern blue jay that apparently got lost since theres only one. and an evening grosbeak. These last two I havent seen here since we moved back here in 2012.

My wife is afraid of birds so no feeders for us. I see a ton of activity behind our home in Phoenix though. I've had a problem lately with a small, fat little bird with a pointed beak that somehow sneaks into my screened-porch every couple days. I have to open the doors and then try to corral him out which takes anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes. He got in there once when I was at work and my wife had me come home because she was afraid to let the dogs out.

Saw a large owl hooting in a tree the other night which was super cool. Not sure what type.

I miss the Pileated woodpeckers and hummingbirds we saw frequently in our last home in Catonsville, tucked into Patapsco State Park.

Here in Bel Air we're getting plenty of birds on the feeder. Using sunflower seeds only and attracts
the usuals. Suet blocks seem to be dominated by woodpeckers .
Always have the limb rats raiding but the feeder's located so our Belgian Mal can enjoy a good rat
chase . [Our Jack Russells always made quick fertilizer out of em].

Hope your feathered fiends return soonest, they're good to have around. Supervel

I was just talking about this with my grandfather (92) today when I was visiting him. I said that I have seen a lot of falcons at my house and he said that he has as well. He has 5+ bird feeders around his property and they are full. I guess the birds have been eaten.

You know, I have had hawks and eagles around the house before. I haven't seen any lately but I haven't been looking for them. I think I'll get the spy glasses out and start checking out the woods. Maybe that is why my feeders are still full.

The snow has some odd characters coming around. For the first time a Brown Thrasher was trying to eat from the feeder. He looked like he was having a lot of trouble balancing on it.

What are you guys doing for water? I use a tin pie plate set in my bird bath. Its easy to dump the ice out of, but I'm getting tired of filling it ten times a day. Southern States in Mt Airy has some electric heaters that go in containers, I'm just not sure what I want. I'll check em out and see what they have. Just curious what others are using.

I have an electric bucket for the goats that is worth its weight in gold. I guess I need a smaller one for the birds.

Put a 40 watt incandescent light bulb in an insulated housing under that pie plate and it won't freeze nearly so fast.

Our hens did fine through the cold. Seeing woodpeckers and winter birds at the feeder.

My neighbor has a light on in his hen house and they seem to be doing fine. I know they are staying close to home as I haven't seen one in my front yard lately. I swear, sometimes I think those chickens are like Beagles, they get on a scent and keep on going.

I filled my main feeder this fall (yes, I know you're supposed to keep them full year round, but I don't. Great birdseed marketing tactic BTW), and noticed very few were hitting it. It did pick up when the snow hit of course.

I also raked my leaves up over the Christmas holidays and noticed that on both days that I was working them, I had a ton (10-20?) of eastern bluebirds on the raked spots getting bugs. I've seen small 'flocks' of bluebirds before - especially as the seasons change, but I've never noticed them after raking. I have no idea how they were able to figure out that there was some fresh turned leaves that might hold bugs - smell I guess?

We have had eagles and hawks to in the past, a couple here and there. Generally would see then 1 - 2 per week. Since November we have 10 - 12 eagles full time and some hawks, and a ton of geese.
