I will readily admit that I am probably not versed enough in Garand rifles to be out searching for more than a shooter :lol2:

Went to Oaks today not particularly searching for anything. Bought some magazines and did a lot of window shopping for most of the day. Came across a table in the last of three halls where a gentleman had a few Garands for sale and this one caught my eye. After a hasty call to Yellowsled with the best description I could muster and a great deal of hesitation on my part I pulled the trigger and made it mine.

Serial number seems to indicate an August 1939 birthday. Also apparently a low enough serial number where this rifle started life off as a gas trap rifle and was later converted. It's clearly been through some sort of refurb which isn't particularly surprising given its age and military service. I'm not sure the TE measurement is all that good.

I know we have folks on here who knows Garands really well. Curious how you think I did overall and what the rifle would reasonably sell for retail. I really liked the price I got especially compared to the other Garands I looked at throughout the day.

I did like the look of that other one I was talking to you about, a 3.7 million Springfield. But this seemed like more rifle for less money.

Your rifle has more than likely been through multiple rebuilds. I would not worry about the muzzle and throat measurenst, they are very acceptable. They actually mean nothing, the proof is how it groups. People get way to hung up on bore measurments
You got a good looking rifle, enjoy it

Can you elaborate on why the throat and muzzle erosion means nothing? I'm curious since it seems to be a common way people measure the "quality" or "life" left in the barrel

Do you know there never was a USGI Muzzle gauge? Arsenals only measured the throat .
I guess maybe I said it wrong. What I meant by my comment was that bore measurements are not everything, the proof is actually how it groups on paper.

Muzzle and throat gauges give a general idea of how much wear there is on a barrel ( barrel life left) so, those measurements are useful in that regard. I have seen brand new barrels guage at 1 and others at 0. Nice looking M1 Garand you picked up there! Shoot it and see if it groups for you. Taking a second look at the pics, is that a crack in the stock next to the back of the trigger guard or just the way it looks in the pic?

It is the way the picture looks. No cracks as far as I can tell
