Once upon a time, when the world was young and Liberty strode among us, one could buy a handgun from a fellow citizen ... without the not-disapproval of our masters. I even have a few from those distant days, before half of you were born.
Look for threads started by MDS user SPQM. He was archiving a lot of this information in the Maryland 2A and National 2A subforums in 2016 and 2017.I've been searching, without success, for a long series of posts someone wrote a few years ago, that outlined the gradual imposition of firearms restrictions in MD. If anyone knows where it is, a link would be useful. This time I'll bookmark it.

Are you suggesting that a handgun purchase didn't have to go through an FFL?
It was perfectly legal to do FTF transfers of handguns.

Correct. Up until about 1996 (I forget the actual date) you could buy a handgun from an individual, shake hands and move on. No paperwork involved at all.
