Depends on what you mean by the bolded above, Maryland's annotated code does not state that the firearm and ammunition must be stored seperately when travelling, just that the firearm must not be loaded. So you should be able to have the unloaded firearm in a case along with a loaded magazine setting in the case beside it.
FOPA requires them to be stored separately. So if you're doing interstate travel and think you may need to keep the possibility of a FOPA-based affirmative defense in court, that's where the separate storage requirement comes from.
