Looks it may have started as this C96 Airsoft...

at least I hope it was, and not an actual Model 712

I didnt realize you picked that up. Sean sent me pics of it from the gun shop after he was done fondling it.

That was a different one. But I know where he was fondling that one. I've had this one for about a year, I have yet to shoot it because I was waiting for a spring kit from Wolf Springs. It showed up about a month or two ago, I need to take some time and put them in so I can take it to the range.

I believe the m32's and a lot of the later made Spanish ones that were China export had detachable boxes.

That said, I too really hope its airsoft.

Sarco or somebody sold a bunch of newly made removable magazine frames back in the '80s (I think '80s). Last few I saw advertised were incomplete castings.
They were still selling the mags until recently.
I vote the thing in the picture is an Airsoft. It's all too smooth, even for a polished refinish. And the Triggergaurd isn't quite right, like not a perfectly copied casting. Almost has an angle in it.

Any interest in a 30 Mauser reloading thread? I'm open to trying new powders besides the standard Unique, Bullseye, and Reloader. I'm pretty complacent with 93 gr RNC over Unique.
