Hi folks! A couple of you gave me some great help on C&R laws a few months ago, and now we're finally in MD and getting settled. Thanks again for the warm welcome!

Been out here two months and haven't been to the range yet :( It was a bonus to find Gilbert Indoor while we were house hunting. Now I just need to make time to get there.

I've had a little training over the past few years, including a one-on-one handgun course, a weekend course through my Krav Maga association at the Surefire Institute in LV, and half a dozen trips to the range. Not trying to name drop, but just so you know we're I'm coming from. Not a total noob, but just starting out (used to shoot .22 rifle with my dad as a kid, but it was a one-off, more than a regular thing). But now I've got the bug.

So...I've Googled around, but I'm looking for recommendations for instructors or schools in the area. I don't mind driving to VA for good training. Based on what I've had so far, I'm looking for something like an intro to competitive shooting. I know some of you will say "Just go to a match and try," but I know we'll all be better off if I get a class in first :)

    Thanks, shooters! :)

    Welcome, sort of new person!

Glad to see you taking the "well regulated" portion of 2A to heart. I try to take some type of training every year, as i believe it is important to be able to competently handle a firearm. Be sure to check out the training and safety forum. Folks often give reviews on classes that they have taken.

I encourage you to get involved in 2A politics, if not so already. I used to not give a shirt. The news covered FSA of 2013, and I said "All that stuff is so stupid. It will never pass because it does nothing to increase safety." Well, it passed, and I started paying attention. Then I got mad about efforts to reduce crime by reducing access to firearms, without regard to the Constitution. Now when it comes to firearms, I'm worse than a reformed smoker. I write letters to the editor, i testify before the legislature, I go to public meetings to chortle and guffaw at stupid remarks made by idiots like Jamie Raskin et al, and I make and carry signs at public events. But enough about me. Maryland is not exactly a firearms friendly state. Consider doing what you can to change that.

    Welcome!

I recommend you attend the Annapolis IDPA Safety & Observation Course, they conduct one per month and the next is on September 23: https://practiscore.com/aafg-idpa-action-pistol-safety-and-observation-class-9-23-17-clone/register. This will give you an intro to the sport, you'll work on some basics, and you'll meet the safety requirement to begin shooting there if you wish.

Last week I took courses with Dynamic Defense Concepts (Basic and Advanced Reactive Gunfighting-Handgun). The classes were awesome. While I didn't take the competitive courses, much of what I learned will apply to IDPA. Trevor is an excellent instructor and I plan to take more of his classes in the future.

I'm working on the fall schedule now.

Ive taken several courses with this outfit including the "intro to competitive shooting". This class gave me the the confidence to start competing in the local idpa and uspsa matches while noticeable improving my shooting skills. If you have any hesitation about drawing from a holster you won't after this class. BigT5g has a good eye and gives lots of individual attention. Definitely recommend this to everyone looking to get into competitive shooting regardless of skill level.

Forgot to add- it's a lot of fun !

    Matt,
If Bullseye (NRA Precision Pistol) interests you I would suggest looking for the closest range that has regular League matches. League is a great way to develop your skills and meet other competitive shooters. My experience has been that Bullseye folks are very helpful when new shooters show up and want to get into competitive marksmanship.

You can probably find close ranges but the Twelfth Precinct, Fairfax Rod & Gun, and Anne Arundel Fish & Game ranges hold monthly matches.

    Good luck and good shooting!
