Here's an interesting find for today. The USMC considering the use of shotguns in the PTO.

Understanding that it would only be lethal at close range. That maiming would be just as desirable because the "yells" would help locate camouflaged enemy and draw out others, not to mention scattered buckshot to the trees would help locate snipers.

    Makes perfect sense

My Grandfather served with the 21st Marines in WW2. He had said shotguns were SCARCE and usually only the dog handlers had them. He said they woulda been handy for shooting into the trees, a niche they ended up finding the M1 Carbine perfect for. Thanks for posting this, I LOVE little documents like this.

That’s awesome! One of my holy grail guns is a U.S. issued Winchester M1897.

I’ll probably have to settle for a Chinese knock off for a shooter though

Did they have 3" 000 Buck magnums then ? I'm guessing no but shame if not.
Shotgun ammo has improved a lot since WWII

The war in the PTO was strictly "sine missione" (without mercy) on either side. It was a war of annihilation and the USMC gave those bastards what they deserved and then some.

I wonder how useful they really would have been against snipers in trees since a soldier with a rifle in a tree could shoot considerably farther than the effective range of a shotgun.

Gunrunners has a Norinco that looks to be in pretty good condition. Was tempted (even took a pic which is attached), but saving for something in 7.62x39 right now.
