What is a good free host site that I can join to put pictures on?

Got my two all cleaned up. I got one real gem, it is the 1940 Tula, which according to 7.62x54r.net it is the rarer of the Mosins (10 out of a possible 10)! So I am psyched about that! :party29:

My other one is a 1933 Izhevsk hex receiver which isn't so rare, but it is still a beaut!

Got them all cleaned and oiled today and they are ready to be tested at the range!

1942 Izzy round. I am very pleased with this and will post pics once I finish cleaning and reassembling.

You got WAY more ambitious than I did!! I boiled the bolt assy intact and saw the cosmo on the water's surface. Pulled it and quickly air dried with a heat gun, Rem-oil followed.

Butt plate w/2 screws also got the hot water treatment and looks great.

I put my .30 jag with dry patches about 10 times and was still coming out brown (cosmo). Wipeout Accelerator with Wipeout Patchout went down the barrel and sat for 2 hrs.

Dry patch and a big mess of black came out. I scoped the barrel and can see 'gritty' stuff inside (rifling looks great) that I'm assuming is cosmo. I'm now repeating the accelerator/patchout bath, and may let sit overnight. I don't know if it's going to be effective against the cosmo.

I'm certain 10 rounds of 7.62x54R will clear the cosmo inside the barrel...:innocent0

For you C&R types (this is my first), is their a favorite cocktail you have for cleaning up after the range with the corrosive milsurp stuff?

    Thanks in advance,

Mark, I heard someone saying they used Windex with ammonia and shot it in the receiver and down the inside of the barrel before leaving the range.

I bet it works until you can clean later the same day.

The MN 91/30 is cleaning up nicely all around, just some problems on the inside of the barrel. See my post about 2 above this one on what I've done. After the 2nd go around I ran 2 dry patches through to clean out the Wipe Out. Put in my bore scope and the pics follow.

Is this an issue of the cosmoline being stubborn and a couple shots down range will "clear"?...or, do I have a bum barrel?

    Thanks in advance...

    Mark C.

I've never been able to get the bore as clean as I want it until I send a couple of boxes of ammo down range. Even electro cleaning wasn't as good as shooting it for me.
    YMMV -greg

I'm personally not sure by looking at it, but have you tried heating up the barrel?

I have not done mine yet, but from what I understand, boiling water poured down the barrel to get it nice and hot is the way to start. You may need to do this several times until most of the Cosmo runs out. Run some patches through until you don't see any more crud and once you happy, oil it up to prevent rust.

This is my first attempt at cleaning up a 91/30 as well, so I'm learning as I go.

    Good luck.

1935 Tula Hex. Notice the fix in the side of the stock. Thought I saw someone mention that ex sniper stocks may have been fixed in this manner.

krucam-- when I cleaned my first MN I used an amway kitchen cleaner in very hot water-a couple caps to a couple gallons- put the action in the bucket-3 gal size- then ran brush down barrel and used nylon brush on action. changed water mix- reversed the barrel in the bucket and brushed from the action forward. then patched and all was good to go.

    Wrong side of the stock.
Plus, >I think< hex receivers only had the early top mounts. There are quite a few more knowledgeable guys on Mosins here-they should be by to correct me if I'm wrong.
