Took my garand with GI wood to the range yesterday and it left this weird ring around my brass on the shoulder.

Awhile back I complained that I was a little disappointed that my CMP Service Grade Springfield came with new CMP wood.

Well I remedied that today - after quite a bit of searching I found a USGI stock with a SA/GAW + a SA/SHM re-arsenal cartouche at a nearly unbelievable price. Comes with all the hardware and has no cracks or splits.

The SA/GAW is a match for the date of manufacture of my rifle (May 1944) and the SA/SHM cartouche indicates that the stock went through an arsenal rebuild in 1945-1947 which is a fairly reasonable estimate of when my receiver would have been returned to Springfield Arsenal for an arsenal rebuild following WWII.

It may not be 100% correct but it's a huge improvement over the brand new CMP stock and I like it and that's what matters to me.

The new CMP stock it came with will be off like a prom dress as soon as this comes in!

Out with the new, in with the old.

Got rid of the new CMP stock on the 1944 and put a SA/GAW, large crossed cannons + SA/SHM cartouche stock and hand guards it. Additionally it has the circle-P and small crossed cannon cartouche on the underside. Great patina on it.

Nothing wrong with new CMP stock, it’s just doesn’t have any character.
