Is there no love for the venerable Winchester Model 12? I've always thought they were the ultimate pump gun.

When my arthritis started to get the best of me I sold off my shotguns, EXCEPT for my model 12 and model 1897. I just couldn’t let them go. They are not perfect by any means, but they are shooters. IMHO they are better than the others that I had. Just in weight alone they tame recoil pretty good.

Y'all are a bad influence. I tripped over a Mossberg 500 with a vent rib barrel locally for $175, so of course, I had to bring it home. The action is very slick. Previous owner added a large white front bead so I suspect that he shot it a lot. Heck of a deal, if you don't mind the checkered wood stock. I have a riot barrel & long magazine tube waiting to go on this one. Oh yeah, probably a new stock too. The butt pad on this one is hard as a rock. What's the life span of those, anyway?

I do find it curious that large framed guys will talk about shooting 12 ga slugs from a light pump gun, but prefer a Remington over Mossberg because it's a little smoother. I'm sticking with Mossberg because it makes sense to stay with one platform. No need to change now.

Might find a 590A1 some day, but there's no rush. I found a great deal on a 20 ga tactical with ghost ring sights. It's an excellent gun. The bantam (i.e. kid's) length stock is actually very good in this role. Zero complaints; exactly what I wanted. Hits where I point, recoil is reasonable even with slugs. 12 ga may be superior, but 20 ga hits pretty freakin' hard too. No bayonet mount on this one. I guess I can live with that for now. Not much chance of having to repel boarders out here. City life is behind me now.

Okay... so I think I read all of the comments/suggestions but did not see the Ithaca 37 mentioned. ...

Great shotgun with a storied history. Biggfoot44 and Derwood (and possibly another) mentioned it upthread.

Lots of love here! They're an engineering and a machining marvel IMO. But unless people are looking on purpose, the Model 12 is far enough removed from production nowadays that many have never seen one, and most have never shot one.

Another fantastic option is a Winchester 1300, not as many options for customization as an 870 or 500 but a quality shotty in your price range

I have 2 Winchester Model 120 Rangers! One with 28 winchoke and the other with open sight rifled slug barrel. In fact I just picked one up at BBP for $150. He has another that pretty nice for the same price. You will be hard pressed to find a pump gun with a smoother action then a 120, 1200 or 1300!

I just picked up a Mossberg 590A1 today. My first pump shotgun in five years. $556 before tax and check. I'm using it tomorrow for the 3-gun match at Quantico.

    Behind enemy lines...
Well, several years ago I picked up a Maverick 88 12 gauge for $180. This is a less expensive Mossberg 500. It costs less because the barrel is made in Mexico and it has a plastic stock.

I LUV it. It has a 18.5" barrel AND..... I shoot clays with it. I can hit 22 out of 25 clays...believe it.

I have never had a failure in over 400 rnds. Check it out!

As a lefty, I really like the ambidextrous bottom eject of the Ithaca 37. I have always wanted a true left hand ejecting pump. However, does anyone know if there were/are other bottom ejecting pump models besides the 37?
