I think I want to experiment with one of those open red dots (holographic?) on a 44 mag revolver. Can't/don't want to spend a ton, looking at Burris Fastfire iii or Vortex Venom with 3moa dots... leaning heavily toward the Vortex... bigger field of view and I am becoming a Vortex fan from some of their optics I have.

Any comments good or bad on me giving this a try? my old eyes are needing something more than black iron sights nowadays. If I don't do the red dot, I will definitely be doing fiber optics... may even do both as insurance.

Looking at a southern hog hunt in 2018 would like to take 44 along as an option in addition to a rifle.

Killed this with one. It was one of those cheapos that could barely hold zero on a .44. I took it off eventually.

For sonething like a .44 Mag, cheap shouldn't be an option.

Good options (proven recoil insensitivity) include Trijicon RMR, Leupold Deltapoint Pro, Aimpoints, or the Trijicon MRO. The recoil from the .44 Magnum will likely shake loose Chinesium optics mounts or electronics.

I agree with Mopar. I'd also make sure whatever you get has a good warranty.

Burris Fast Fire is my go to and they have a lifetime warranty

I use a fast fire III on my 44mag 16 inch carbine. I load this hot with max loads of H110/WW296 and up to 300grain bullets. It has never had a problem and zero is stable if I take it off and put it on again.

Totally agree. That were my point.

    Problems with Burris Fastfire 3

I bought a Fastfire III about 18 months ago. Great customer service. It certainly looks like they stand behind their product.
I just wish they could just do it less often. I returned my 3rd one today.
I had it mounted atop a Glock 19 Gen 4 MOS. First top got fried. Shot several hundred rounds, fairly quickly, and the top could not take the heat.
Second top was a new replacement. Lasted a couple months. Would not stay on. Third top was a new replacement. Would not stay on. Recoil caused it to turn off every few rounds.
Again, great service. I haven’t gotten a reliable one yet.
I am hoping the 4th one is the charm.
If it is not, I will move on to Trijicon.

I bought one of the first early Simmons red dot sights (circa early 1990's) which is close to the Leaper's pattern. I put it on my Super Blackhawk for short period of time...a few hundred rounds of heavy handloads.
It held up well. That dot has since lived on my Ruger MkII bullseye pistol.
I understand the Leaper's optics are decent for the money. May be why they are on the M29 Hunter.
Most of the time when I was try optics on my Super I used a shotgun scope or pistol scopes. Both held up well.

I realized I don't care for optics on handguns so I eventually traded my pistol scope for a Ruger Mk II rifle in 30-06.
