Patriot Picket News Service is here today at the Maryland General Assembly for the Special Session to report first hand on the vote to select the new Speaker of the MD House of Delegates!

The new House Speaker replaces the late Delegate Michael E. Busch, who died April 7, 2019.

The only two candidates for the position are both Democrats; Dems hold a 2 to 1 majority in the House of Delegates.

Delegate Maggie McIntosh and Delegate Dereck Davis are the candidates, and their competition to be selected has fractured The Party, possibly to our benefit.

This thread is to post updates, info and speculation about the political significance and potential beneficial consequences for MD 2A from the impending vote, which occurs today when the Special Session is convened at 12 noon.

I expect the special session to have a live audio (no video) feed from the floor of the House of Delegates.

Click on the link below to bring up the MGA homepage; look for the “session status“ box beneath the right hand column entitled “what’s happening now“ to the right side on this homepage.

Keep refreshing this page and look for a red “live“ button to appear in this session status box, which indicates that the live feed from the House floor has commenced.

Click that button to listen to the legislators speaking about the vote on the live audio.

(If the audio feed does not appear in a new window, go to your browser settings and click the button that says “allow pop-ups“ – – the audio feed opens in a new window which appears as a “pop up” on your screen.)

The significance of this vote is that the Democrats are badly split in their support between the two Dem candidates for Speaker, and for the first time in a generation the Republicans have some remarkable voting leverage in the MGA.

MD House Republicans, though in the Minority, can nevertheless potentially influence the outcome of this vote, asking for some political concessions in exchange for that support of one candidate: Delegate Dereck Davis, who is viewed as more moderate than Delegate Maggie McIntosh:

House Democrat Caucus just emerged without a press conference; Delegate Moon exulting beyond reporter Bryan Sears about the meeting.

    About what, unknown as yet.

Hi-larious editorial exposing just how frantic white MD Dems have become about the African-American moderate Delegate Dereck Davis possibly becoming Speaker (with the support of MD House Republicans) instead of the white lesbian radical Delegate Maggie McIntosh.

The editorial whined that the selection of Del. Derek Davis to be Speaker would give too much power to PG County, because Hogan grew up there. Really.

The republicans should vote present and let the dims fight it out.
No. If the new Speaker is elected because of GOP votes, the rest of the House that voted for the other person will be less likely to work with the new Speaker.

Press scrum is quite large outside the Caucus rooms.

Press is euphoric about their fellow Dems, now mysteriously returning inside their Caucus room:

I knew they could never agree on who should follow in Bush's shoes.

I hope Mike Miller is not learning from this debacle, and hand picking and negotiating for his own successor. That is how the power strangle hold would be maintained. May the House be in turmoil for the next decade!

Loud cheering now audible from behind the closed doors of the Dem caucus at 11:15 AM.

Tension mounting now as print reporters squared off briefly against the (view blocking) TV cameras crowding the doors in anticipation of news:

Fun fact: today’s vote selects the Speaker but only until the first day of the 2020 MGA session, when the first order of business is the vote for a Speaker to preside over that House session.

So, one screw-up, misstep, verbal gaffe (AKA “telling the truth”), #metoo revelation, bribery, graft, gift card misuse, tax evasion, Healthy Dereck book sale scandal, Maggie strip club story, L-word joke, N-word reference, anger management problem, illegal alcohol control board influence, pot licensee “consulting” payment, etc., etc and all the countless other ways Dems cheat, sexually harass, insult, threaten and intimidate everyone and each other and,

    You’re Speaker for Life!

Update: at 11:51 AM both Dems and Repubs still caucusing; unlikely now to be in session by noon.
