Just keep in mind, that depending on the target (bullseye vs. steel silhouette) too much magnification isn't always better. Mirage can be a bitch.
Yet another good reason to consider a variable.
For the coin you're looking at, also consider US Optics, Nightforce, or S&B
Even for the money they get for a MK4 8.5-25x, it's still a jump up to get to Nightforce. I have a 3.5-15x50 and two 5.5-22x50s and those rascals are pretty spendy. I would love to have one of their new model FFPs with the zero stop, but those guys are *really* up there. Sh!t & Bendover are also very high dollar for models in this magnification range. I have looked at and shot through several USOs and I just can't see spending the extra $500-600 over a NightForce. I take particular exception to their very short and critical eye relief. A friend has two and the new USO spotter, and while they are all supposed to have the same "MOA" (LOL, really "inch per hundred yards") reticle, none of the three look the same. Their CS is TOPS though, never seen better support on something like that.
Keep an eye out on SH for group buys on optics.
There can be some very good deals over there, sometimes gets pretty tedious waiting it all out.
Just a heads up, I just bought something similar from Midway.

    The C&R discount was $250!

    Well worth it!
Definitely. Heckuva deal on a very nice scope.

BTW I shot the R5 for the first time today.

All I can say is Wow.

POI drifted until I got about 10 rounds in then it shot consistent as all get out.

One ragged hole at 50yds, 1.5" at 100 and I know that was all due to my errors (still getting used to seeing my pulse drift and the trigger)

    Back to some dry firing!

Yes, but not the 56mm objective. When added bulk and problematic cheek weld are considered, I find the 56mm objective very hard to justify.

In the pics below, you can see just how bulky even the 50mm objective is. With both rifles, even with an Eagle stock pack, the adjustable combs had to come up some.

This is the 5.5-22x50mm on my .260:

LOL, sorry, didn't realize there was a question.

In NightForce, I personally like the MLR reticle for several reasons.

It is mil based and that way I can communicate effectively in mils with my spotter and other shooters. The MOA based reticles are just too busy for me, although they can allow more speed and precision in ranging, and marginally easier to use for holdovers.

The MLR has the .25 mil tic marks at the top and far right that allow me to precisely mil targets for ranging purposes. This is important to me because I shoot unknown distance (UKD) matches that do not allow laser rangefinders.

The reticle choice is a very subjective thing and what is "best" will vary greatly with your usage.

Leupold's equivalent (copy) of the NightForce MLR reticle is their TMR. I have this reticle in my 6.5-20x50 Vari-X III. It has fine hash marks down to .2 mil, and so may offer slightly better resolution for ranging.

yeah, i second the renaming of the thread to Ed's sweet rifle porn.

Ed is a really nice guy and a meticulous expert in our chosen sport. He deserves to have all the toys his safe can hold.

Here's my baby, Remington 700 in .308. Leupold 6.5 to 20, IBA scope mount, Badger floorplate in a H-S varmint stock. Had a timney trigger installed, Skim bedded in titanium devcom, recrowned and parkerized. Big thanks to Dan at Gun Connection for all the help and excellent work

    Nice looking rifle dozer
    Agreed.:party29:
Curious, if any one can help me out. Whats the advantage in upgrading the floor plate?
    Two reasons:

First would be to provide a heavier-duty system, and it is just one of the upgrades that goes into making a hardened combat rifle "bombproof" - reliable in function and zero. The Badger Ordnance M4 is very solid and a very heavy duty unit. The original factory bottom metal is relatively lightweight and typically of thin aluminum, and will not withstand the same amount of stress and/or screw torque. Having very heavy action screw torque (@65-70 Inch Pounds) helps prevent changes in zero due to impact and also helps assure repeatability of zero when the action is removed from the stock. The good news is that this is a feature that very few of us really need. Upgraded bottom metal is also more resistant to the accidental opening that often occurs when the rifle with the OEM floorplate is subjected to rigorous use.

Second reason would be to provide a detachable magazine system where none exists previously, or to upgrade the rather light duty factory DM system. There are quite a few DM systems and the Badger Ordnance M5 is not only VERY heavy duty, but also accepts the very popular and field-proven AICS magazines.

Hey guys, I never put it in this thread, so here is my VERY humble submission. Just wanted to thank E. Shell for input and advise...

This is stock all the way Rem700sps tact 20". Dan at GC adjusted the trigger down to 2.5, and I am really just starting to shoot rifle other than 22, so my shooting will only get better with practice (I hope).

Got a Bushnell 4-12x40 scope to learn with, and I plan on eventually adding a bi-pod and possibly a diff stock, but for me, this works well to learn.. I want to shoot in prone, and bag/bench, to learn the rifle and feel first.

Taking my time, not shooting great yet...the old "it's me, not you" Mr. rifle thing definitely applies. :o

The only thing I've found I really don't care for is the tiny bolt handle, I'd like something longer. Getting used to the recoil/whip from a 20" is a little odd too, but form and rep's should help.

I'm REALLY going to need to read up on range scope adjustment and a few other topics as I move out beyond 100/200 yds. I'm sure I'll be asking plenty more Q's ;)
