    I'm under the impression that I do not have to register a legally purchased handgun that was obtained while living in another state, but can have it registered with state police if I feel that it's necessary.

    Is this true?

    Would I benefit from registering with state police?

    Thanks in advance.

    I used the search bar and nothing matches what I searched for. So, maybe you could give me the title to the thread I'm looking for instead of acting like a douche. Thanks! :)

    No problem. Only things you can't bring into the state are the following "assault pistols"

    AA Arms AP-9 semi-automatics
    Bushmaster semi-automatic pistol;
    Claridge HI-TEC, semi-automatic pistol;
    D Max Industries semi-automatic pistol;
    Encom MK-IV, MP-9, MP-45 semi-automatic pistols;
    Heckler and Koch semi-automatic pistol SP-89;
    Holmes MP-83 semi-automatic pistol;
    Ingram MAC 10/11 semi-automatic pistol and any variation including the Partisan Avenger and the SWD Cobray;
    Intratec TEC-9/DC-9 in any centerfire variation;
    P.A.W.S. type semi-automatic pistol;
    Skorpion semi-automatic pistol;
    Spectre double action semi-automatic pistol (Sile, F.I.E., Mitchell);
    UZI semi-automatic pistol;
    Weaver Arms semi-automatic Nighthawk pistol; and
    Wilkinson semi-automatic "Linda" pistol.

    For anything else, if you legally own it, you're fine. You will end up registering any new pistols you buy here though.

    Yep, MD considers it "Voluntary Registration" via mandated paperwork.

    Lovely.

    Yeah, I've gone throught this list and just wanted to make sure I had interperted everything correctly. I'd rather not end up with fellony charges for unregisterd weapons. Thanks again.

    [thread jack]

    I thought the S/A VZ-61 Skorpion pistol was now on the OK list to purchase. In fact, I've seen them in stock at at least two MD dealers within the past 6 months.

    You have nothing to gain by "voluntarily registering" your handgun with the state, and possibly a great deal to lose, down the road.

    The only reason to register a handgun you bought while living in another state is if you have not purchased a regulated firearm in Maryland, then you will be exempt from the training requirement for the new HQL.

    If my father gifts a old revolver in NJ, do I have to register it in MD??

    To legally transfer ANY firearm from state to state, even between family members, it MUST go through an FFL. This is Federal law.

    If the recipient is an MD resident, and it is a "regulated " firearm (handgun or certain semi auto rifles), it MUST go through an MD FFL and you must do the appropriate paperwork, which WILL register the firearm. This is MD law.

    If from MD resident to MD resident, for a "regulated" firearm, who are both immediate family, you only have to fill out a form 77R and send it to MSP, which does "register" the firearm. This is MD law.

    If both of you resided in NJ at the time of the gifting, you would need to meet NJ law at the time of the gift.

    That's what I figured. Could I bring the revolver to my FFL in MD and do the paperwork?? When I asked them they said that I could and all I would have to give them is my fathers name and address.

    Technically your father should bring or ship the pistol to the FFL.

    But, if the FFL will work with you, go for it.
