  • My wife wanted to go to the wolf sanctuary in Lititz PA today. We arrived a little too late so I decided to make a side trip to get some reloading supplies.

Is the trip to Shydas worth it compared to just buying online from places like Gamaliel's, Precision Reloading, Bart's, etc. and just having is shipped to my doorstep? I ask because I really do not know. Some shotgun shooting friends used to rave about Shydas all the time, but that was when the internet and retail sales over the internet was non-existent or in its infancy. I am guessing the only reason for me to stop in at Shydas might be to buy shot to reload for shotguns. Wish I had known you were there. Could have used a price update on shot to compare it to what PG Trap & Skeet charges. Guess I could always just pick up the phone and call for that information.

So, how much did you end up getting? Was the car riding a lot lower on the drive home? lol

If I could get a bulk deal on shot, I would take the truck up there and/or just swing by on the way home when we are up that way.

Their prices are comparable to any of the online reloading shops such as Powder Valley. I was already within 20 minutes of the place, so it was a no brainer. I know absolute zero about reloading shotshells, other than lead is heavy.

    Did an earthquake hit it?

Nope. The MDS random photo re-arranger struck again. (I gave up on trying to figure it out)

    Fabs,

While it isn't as cheap as it used to be, you can still save a lot of money in comparison to buying from Bass Pro / Cabelas. For example; I can get shot for $35 per bag when BP is $50, primers are $30 vs $40+ for BP, powder by the pound is about $8 to $12 cheaper than BP and even cheaper if you buy 8#s. Since I make my own bullets, I don't know how much they are but I'm pretty sure they will be cheaper than BP.

I don't drive up just to go to Shyda's. My wife and I drive up, take a train ride in Lancaster, eat some Amish food, visit some tourist traps AND go to Shyda's. Sometimes we drive up to Shyda's and then over to Allentown for Sporting Clays and down to Kempton to visit Dixon Muzzleloading and take another steam train ride.

When you do it as a side trip, it works out pretty well. ;)

I have bought all of 2 bags of shot from Bass Pro. #4 and #6. All other reloading supplies for both shotgun, rifle, and pistol have come from elsewhere. Usually buy shot at PG Trap & Skeet. Used to order shotgun powder, primer, and wads from Gamaliel's, but in my search for .338 Lapua brass tonight I realized that Brownell's bought out Gamaliel's internet sales side. Most metallic reloading stuff has come from Midway and Brownell's, but now I am looking around in the search for .338LM.

Wish I had known Shyda's was by Lancaster. Used to drive up there for bike races a couple times a year from 2005 to 2009.

Shyda's is 17 minutes away. Just sayin.
FWIW- Shyda's is an impressive gun shop. The most impressive part is their reloading section. They have more powder/primers/projectiles than Arundel Mills BPS, Harrisburg BPS and Cristiana Cabelas combined. I am not exaggerating.

I have never been awed by the reloading stuff I have seen at a Bass Pro or the Cabela's in Christiana or Gainesville. Now, I have been to the Cabelas in Hamburg and West Virginia many years ago, and the reloading selection at those stores was awesome. With that said, my buddy was here last week and we were both wearing Cabela's sweatshirts. Got to talking and he told me that the quality of Cabela's clothing and the store in Christiana is pretty sad now. So sad that a crap store was able to buy out a better store, and now the crap store is turning the better store to crap. I would write "lol", but it really is sad.

17 minutes from where? As a matter of fact, where is Shydas?

The best time to go to Shyda's is the Saturday of the Lebanon Gun Show which is right down the street...April 6 or November 2, 2019.

I like shydas as I can pay cash and don’t have to pay hazmat. I routinely am in the area for a variety of reasons so that makes it even easier to pay them a visit.

Check their hours though - one day of the week they close earlier than the rest and that caught me a couple of times

    Thanks, never heard of them...

Note their hours, and that they are closed on Sunday:sad20: That's why I said it's best to go on the Saturday of the gun show. For me, it's too far of a drive just to go to Shydas. Trop Gun Shop and Kinsey's Outdoor World aren't terribly far away if you make the trek.

The sanctuary is a very cool place. Went to one of their full moon events a little over a year ago. Highly recommend going whether it is for an event or just a daily tour. They also run a small bed and breakfast on site.
