Many current gun shops send their work out as they don't do enough to offset the expense of the chemicals and maintenance involved in having a bluing operation. In 2019 Maryland, I can't imagine the hoops you have to jump through regarding ventilation, permits for the chemicals, decontamination station etc. that the State will require. :sad20:

Someone should open up a place that has women, does tattoos and bluing.

    Not in that order.

Hot bluing is a big setup, and a good bit of money. For little use. And for an occasional job, there is the time and cost to get everything hot.

    Parking is easier.

The Hunter's Den in Waynesboro PA used to do it. Not sure if they still do.
I think they wait until they have several pieces so it may not be fast.

    Now in Tennessee ,
Atlantic Guns used to do it , They did a excellent job back when Scott , Of Scott's Gunsmithing wored there till he started his shop , I think that they send it out now but they do Cerakote in house . Give Scotts Gunsmithing a call if he does it I'm sure it will be a long wait till he has enough guns needing it to be worth firing up the tanks , or he may just send it out .

Have to watch hot bluing on double barrel shotguns.

Some are soft soldered and the solder will melt.

That is why many are rust blued.

Duffys, I had a shotgun hot blued by them a few months ago and they did a great job. I was concerned about the solder joint on the double barrel and they were able to get it done with no problems. Did all the parts of the gun including prep work. A bit pricey and took about 3 months wait time as they need to have enough work to run the blueing process.

Back when Accokeek Sports was open, Roland Jurgenson (sp??) did a beautiful job on hot bluing, IF he was interested in the project.

He blued a Ruger #1 barreled action that a member from the sportsman's club had 'smithed in .375 H&H.
    (Gorgeous rifle. Octagonal barrel.)

I remember that Wayne told Roland to NOT touch anything about the rifle (filing flats, polishing, etc.).

The finished product was outstanding, and that rifle is the only one that I've fired, that actually put me on my butt!

I had heard that Roland moved to upper New England (Maine, if memory serves me) and had since passed away.
